After you guys did such a good job of helping gjm, I wonder if you could give me some pointers.
I have a similar problem, but get total loss of power at high speeds, usually only after I have just been accelarating quite hard I think, rather than steady running, And usually after car has been running for a while, but maybe that is because I take it easy at first.
It totally loses power for between about a second sometimes upto three seconds and then kicks back in.
I do move the relays/ecu to get at the battery a lot and have often removed the ht lead for security.
Do my symptoms suggest something in particular or could it be any of the ones mentioned in gjm's thread.
I did clean the stepper motor a few months ago, which stopped some erratic idling (Think it was the stepper motor !), not sure if the problem started since then. Does it have to be put back a certain way ! Also is the bible worth getting from steve heath. It sounds like it. Please Help, Car has been perfect for a few years apart from the idling and then I think it was only having a go at me because it was not getting let out enough.

Could be any of a number of things, but a worn out throttle pot can cause those symptoms.

Cheers,

Thanks Peter
You couldn't tell me where that actually is could you.
I assume it is the bit at the end of the cable.
The car has only done 40k miles, so I don't know if it would wear out so soon, but the car has been stood a lot for the last 18 months, could it equally just be sticking and sending a signal that is screwing up the ecu. ?? Does it work like that ?

It would tell you where the throttle pot is located, how it should be set up and why it can be a real swine to diagnose unless you have an oscilloscope and the other 50 odd things that can cause these problems.

Be aware of replacing the car by stealth. The injection and ignition parts are expensive and you can quickly rack up several hundred pounds of cost and not get anywhere.

The real problem is being able to reproduce the fault so that it can be checked out.

I had a similar problem with my Tuscan S. Eventually it was tracked down to a faulty temp sensor in the cooling circuit. When no signal was coming from the sensor then the ECU responded and shut down the fuel. With a new sensor fitted all has been well. Don't know if the Chimaera has the same or similar electronic set up but it may be worth a look.
