Guys,
need a new rear number plate - the translucent type for the Chimaera with the lights inside the boot.
Is the dealer the best to go to, or somewhere else?
Any more jazzy versions available.

Before I bought translucent plates from fancypates.com, I had the honeycombed variety on the rear. The translucent one IMO, illuminates the number plate much better.

Yes I think we did. It was my original question!

A lot of manufacturers don't sell legal plates, they are signs. www.fancyplates.com are an example, and they still offer honeycombe effect (I like this) but I wouldn't worry too much. You just don't get a plate with a BS kite mark on.

So what.

it is not illegal if it was originally fitted at time of manufacture

That's not what I actually said. I'm just saying that not all reg.plate manufacturers supply legal plates - i.e with a BS no. and kite mark. But you can always get a sign instead! The rules (Construction and Use Regulations) have changed over the years, the last being Sept 2001 (I think) when the new style came in and tightened up on typeface etc. But it's not retrospective - cars registered before then need to comply with the regs in place when new. Also note that "personal" plates I think, do not need to comply with the new typeface regs.

This subject has confused me slightly.

How can the Authorities PROVE that the plate on your car that doesn't comply with the New Regs, was made and fitted to the car after the new regs came into force?

For Instance, what would stop me getting hold of a second hand Plate making machine, and selling plates which don't comply to the new regulations as long as the Registration Number is one that pre dates the new regulations ie Sep 2001?

It is illegal to sell number plates today unless they have the new size digits/spacing, have the BS. number showing they comply with the new reflecting requirement spec. and have the name and area of either whoever fitted them or whoever manufactured them. The age of the registration number is irrelevant and the same rules apply to personalised plates. In theory if you have a car with a pair of old style plates and you break one you can only replace one or both of the new style. They have also tightened up on spacing of letters as far as the MOT goes, eg making reg no “TUR 130” read “TURBO”. If you are prosecuted twice for incorrect spacing on a plate by the Police (unlikely, but possible) you can lose the plate, simply as that.

They are also planning to make it compulsory from some time next year to have “GB” plates before you travel abroad too. There are still two grey areas the first is the pre Sept 1972 plates and the second is on Japanese imports which are exempt from the new size/spacing rules. The only way you can supply illegal plates is to claim they are for off-road or photographic use, as has already been mentioned above.

Yes but how can they prove you bought one after these new regs came in. I have an Old Style on the Front of my Car and a new style on the back after the rear shattered (don't know how). Went through the MOT ok. If you have a plate made up to old style specs as a Show Plate, then use it on the road, how could they possibly prove it wasn't on the car pre sep '01?

The fact you have a "new" number plate on the back of your car just shows what is already happening. The short answer is they can’t but rest assured the “old” number plates will not be allowed to go on much longer no matter what the excuse for supplying them is. They are already working towards licensed number plate manufacturers and these recent changed are just the first step. The next one is proof of ownership, you will only be able to buy a plate by proving you own the car and supplying ID. There will come a time soon where the old style plate will fail the MOT and then they will all be gone in a year. We have sold number plates to people who have failed MOTs on “spacing” so it is already happening.

There is also the other minor point which (IMHO) is the real reason and that is that the Police are currently investing a fortune into Automated Number Plate Reader (ANPR) cameras to read plates and we all know what that means
