Thanks to Toweringeagle, I should have a copy of the TVR story on its way out to me on VHS.

My question is this:

Is it possible to use a JVC GRDX28EK as a remote recording device to copy something from VHS onto minidv??

I know the easy route is to use a DAT100 recorder, but I dont have one so this is my only option for the moment until I have another brain fart

Thanks in advance

I don't know anything about that JVC. Does it have AV-IN? If so then copying it should be relatively easy.

Also, fyi, the newer camcorders will allow you to do an analogue to digital passthrough into your computer for avi capture...

Hi Ernest

I cant see an AV in anywhere on the camcorder

I know how to record AVI to the camcorder, but no idea about connecting the camcorder to the VCR as a recording unit....Im sure there is a way, I just cant see it!

I know you can definately set the camcorder up to play straight through the the VCR so Im wondering if there is a way to record too??

Hang on....I have just found an AV in socket on the front of the camcorder...what next?

You probably need to look for a cable that came with your camera unless you have a composite (yellow) and audio in (usually white and red for stereo or black for mono)...

Hi Ernest

Ive found the lead. It has the usual white/red/yellow male plugs, plus a thin black one (similar to a headfone jack) the slim USB style camera connection and a plug that looks rather similar to a keyboard/mouse PS2 connection from a PC!?

That last plug will probably be an S-video. If you have an S-video out from your vcr, you can use that instead of a composite.

You have two ways to try this now.

1) Plug your vcr into the camcorder. Plug your camcorder into your PC. Turn the camcorder on in "vcr" mode. Press play on your actual vcr and see if your pc will pick up the signal from the vcr -> camcorder -> PC on a "pass-through" basis.

2) If 1 doesn't work, you can actually use your camcorder as a vcr. Record the vhs tape onto your camcorder tape. After you do that, then plug your camcorder into your pc and capture normally.

---

If you run into any problems, post back and I will track down a copy of the manual for your camcorder and try to offer further suggestions. Which software do you use for capture, by the way?

edited to add - whoops! Re-read your first post. Suggestion 1) above will put the footage on your PC. Suggestion 2) will put the footage on a mini-dv tape. If your ultimate goal is to get the footage on your pc, suggestion 1) is a time-saver and does not require the taping of the footage to minidv first.

Righto Ernest, upon investigation into my camcorders standard opperations, it doesnt look to be equiped with the VCR mode allowing filming from external sources such as bullet cams and stuff, so its pretty much hopeless!

Ive just had the camera piped into the tv/vcr and couldnt get a damn thing down so I'll have to find another way of doing it!!

Thanks for the help brother, I really should know more about technology

Yep...

Just looked up your model number. Looks like you have to have the GR-DX35 or GR-DX55 in order to do Audio/Video in to the camera.

However, all is not lost. You could, instead, hook up your vcr to something like this:

This is the Dazzle Digital Video Creator 150. About $129 in the US. It allows you to import movies into your pc from various analogue sources. USB 2. They also make a firewire version IIRC. It won't transfer video to MiniDV, but I am assuming that you wanted to get the video into your PC in the long run...
