Yes i was, for Exeter. Was a fantastic track although i've never raced there before so my times could have been better, was amazed how much speed could be taken thru' the tighter corners, a much grippier track than Whilton Mill for example.

I race for Exeter, who are you with?

Cheers,
Rob.

im with formula Brookes! so was pretty pleased that the A team won the title. I'm only in the E team, as it was my first time in BUKC this year! i loved clay though, what a great circuit. I'm thinkin of doing Club 100 next season maybe, when i've got a job.

Our team was a rookie team aswel, so we're very pleased with our results. It was pretty intense starting in the middle of the grid, when the only practice you've had is the couple of formation laps!

I'd certainly consider Club100 post-uni, it would be interesting to see if you still get people with big egos. Some of the racing in my race was just stupid.

Looking forward to next year already, we had to fund it ourselves this year so only did half the rounds

Cheers,
Rob.

i competed back when it was the inter-university karting championship circa 1999 and organised by Cardiff University Motorsports (or CUM as they were affectionatly known!)

there were some massive egos in the championship back then, most of the bournemouth drivers gave the impression they were all destined to be in F1 and one or two from Nottingham found themselves in the barriers because they couldnt keep their mouths shut.... ahh happy days!

We (as in UWE) turned up in fancy dress for most of the events, our best effort was beachwear at Daytona were we had torrential rain all day. The York Uni were always kanckered having driven their minibus the length of the country to the events, most bnotably the one at Gosport!....

yeh, some teams do make a hell of an effort to get to some of the tracks. there was a few ego's on the track, but i think thats natural in M'sport. i'd really like to do club 100 though, as i want to race at some point im my life ( probably when i can afford it!!) but karting should help.

what do you drive rob? i've got an old mini. they are great fun!

It was quite an effort for me to get their too, near 400 mile round trip from my home in PZ as Exeter had already broken up for Easter! The track was well worth it though, drifting around the right hander after the flat-out left kink was fantastic.

I'm currently driving around in my mums Astra (blue one, parked down the end by Baths minibus next to the big building for the radio controlled cars?) Actually managed to attract a fair bit of attention in as whilst sat in it having the engine running to get the heater to work i hit the throttle wide open by accident, looked like a complete cock! Still, i'm utterly skint a the moment so having mums car to use is great, hoping to buy my own car this summer.

Pablo - Fancy dress would be great, but it was -1 with the windchill last week, bugger hanging about in a chicken suit or something! I was in t-shirt, long sleeved t-shirt, hoody and race suit. Looked like the michelin man afterwords (although not compared to my team mate who must have, how shall we say, one of the healthiest appetites amongst any BUKC racer!)

I guess you're right about big egos in motorsport being commonplace, but i'm still suprised by how bad the racing can get at points. Although it was way better than Whilton Mill which we attended.

Cheers,
Rob.

hah, the one in gosport was great. I didn't go but tim drove the big yello wminobus there and back single handedly. He was knackered.

I have fond memories of that minibus, between 70 and 80mph the whole thing shook and shuddered and creaked like crazy, but once you broke the 80mph barrier it all got serene again. On one downhill stretch of motorway near leeds we used to get the speedomtere off the scale!

I wish I'd made it to Clay but sadly I had to go home (my Dad is ill). Bit of a shame really. I agree, it's a fantastic track.

Swansea Uni had a good team one year and did nothing the next! Anyone remember Kingston? Better known as KOKS!

Yep, some of the Kingston team fully live up to the name aswell, although in any team sports there's going to be an element of "boys will be boys".

That and i'm jelous because the buggers get it all paid for!

Rob.

ahhh the mighty KOKS, we had some extravagant bets with between UWE and the KOKS team at races. At Clay Pigeon, the winning team won a chocolate cake, a bottle of fanta, the obligatory packet of plain chocolate digestives (mc vities) and an assortment of savoury snacks from the supermarket deli counter...

KOKS always got it loads of money form their SU. Running the UWE team left me and George in debt of about £500 between us as the University wouldnt give us anything...Bournemouth had very shiney race suits which they meticulously folded into those little bags after each race. This in the days where we used the prokarts at whatever circuit we ended up at...

Those Bournemouth shaps looked very gay in their Silver suits! Nottingham really were gay!

hehe, im sure everyone looked cool in their suits. i bet the pro-karts were lame at some of the high speed tracks like clay. yeh, the KOKS had my mates phone the night before ( as we stayed over in the caravans ) and they were sending all the girls in his phone book dirty messages! was quite funny when JV asked who'd lost a phone, as he said this, it rang, and he answered in that fantastic cockney accent!

Given it was actually snowing one year at clay the prokarts were quite amusing. Using prokarts levelled up the field a bit as not everyone had two stroke experience thus no one could take advantage of their experience.

interesting thread this..

i can't believe how much the uni karting scene has developed in the last 15 years. when i was at uni up in hull, we had one of ( if not the) first karting teams (in 1992), and we had to make do with racing against ourselves once a month on some disused railway land, now all the uni's are racing each other in a league, at proper kart tracks. still in my day we got the union to part fund the racing so we could do a grand prix for £20 each - oh and by the end of the first year we were the biggest club in the uni with 500 members.
happy days....

ps i 'won' that first years 'unofficial' championship.
