200sx fuel consumption (real world figures please)

Hi guys.

I'm thinking about getting one of these but cannot afford to have worse consumption than my Honda Prelude (22-25mpg)

What consumption do you really get in real world driving-I know we can all get 30+mpg if we drive at 56mph all day so I'm not interested in your best ever readings. I want to know what you achieve in regular 'sporty' real world driving on motorways and town??

Id generally get about 25-27mpg (S14). When I managed to behave on a motorway trip I got 38mpg (and over 400 miles on the tank).

That said others ive spoken to get pretty crap mpg. I think it can go downhill fast if its been tuned.

i had a s14a for 2 years and i used to get late 20's mpg driving pretty hard and a bit more on a run..

i also found that once tuned the mpg went down quite a bit but the fun did go up alot though!!

Generally my weekly average is 27 mpg with 350 bhp.... a good mixture of fast driving and tootling Thats a lot to do with the mapping amongst other things... did less when it was standard.

Thanks guys. It seems the consumption is pretty poor, especially when tuned except for SteA. Thats impressive mpg for any car putting out 350bhp!!

My almost stock S13 gets anywhere between 19-26mpg. Average week I'd say 23mpg.

If you have a root around on the sxoc there are quite a lot of people who get good mpg with relatively high power... the others with the Horsham Developments stage 3 map seem to be able to get about the same

s13 stage1, 22-25. Don't think i've dropped below 20. That includes daily 3 mile commute. Notes to self; must speak to steveG, must get bicycle out of garage.

I have the same spec at Steve and get very similar mpg, 30+ on runs. It does get a bit thirsty if you are in stop start traffic, down to 23.

The remap is the best thing you can do for mpg, even for a near standard car

Sorry for the hijack, SteA and Lofty, could you breifly list what you've had done to the cars to get them to that sort of power output? I'm thinking of buying one of these cars very soon (see here) and I'm just trying to pickup as much info as possible.

Also are the brakes and gearbox up to the job of handling 350bhp?

You dont have to do the engine work I've done, there are lots of people running this power on standard internals, sxoc has several threads dedicated to just power figures and mods to give you an idea. Lots of my stuff is also geared towards track use so may not be needed.

Gearbox is a point for discussion, and dependent upon your clutch etc it is a potential weak point.

Brakes, really depends what you want to do. For fast road and intermittent track use, it would be good enough to uprate the pads and ditch the crappy rear brakes and put some Z32 (300zx) rears on. I do a lot of track stuff so run a skyline GTR conversion on the fronts too, the brakes are excellent even after a full day of track abuse.

Hi Dan,

My spec is almost identical to Steve's but I have completely standard internals and standard headgasket.
I also recommend improving the brakes once power is increased. I went for a 310mm front conversion using a spacer bracket for the standard 4-pot calipers. The rears are more or less stock, but I am considering a 302mm rotor kit.
You will certainly benefit from some uprated suspension too, but it's not very expensive (c.£700 inc new suspension arm components to ensure correct alignment)
