Hi all,

Currently looking around at buying an early chimp. Have seen one or two with Chrome/ALI clock surrounds and heater controls. Are these available as an aftermarket accessory?

any Idea how much or where. If Not How about a scrapped car would they be easy to replace and fit.

have looked on LEVEN but they don't seem to have what i am looking for.

Mac - no, they're not available as an after-market add on at all - you're right about having to get a scrapped car. Ally dials would be a simple fix, but heater controls a biggish job (dash out methinks tho not a job I've done). Better to get yrself a mid '94 car onwards which generally have said bits already in position IMHO. But then I'm biased about late '94 tivs...good luck, Tant

ps Leven alloy air vents due at last in late February according to Julie et al. Will look like the Griffy ones except our smaller shape (if you see wot I mean...)...for those of us following the saga.... Holy Grail etc etc

Thanks, a bit confused though did all chimps after mid 94 come with ali dials? i have seen atleast one without. Was it a factory option?

Feed me knowledge!

MAC5,

If you do a search in the TVR Forums you should find some Threads with some useful information about actually rubbing down the black dials to show the stainless steel i think its in either this forum or the Griffith forum.
It would be very expensive to replace them all.
There are many different companys that sell dials of all sorts but not sure you would get the TVR emblem on it.

All the best

Suspect it's the usual Blackpool 'oh it's thursday wot's in the parts bin today' routine, but in general the black dial surrounds were phased out & the ali ones came in 94ish - not to sound too anorakky, the big dials went first all together and the baby ali surrounds on the three warning lights changed later. I wouldn't get too hung up on the dates tho, you cd probably specify black anytime if u really wanted... It's usually the colour of the dials themselves that concern people more - eg magnolia, black, yellow, white etc. Now that DOES change the appearance...

ps it's still not a 'chimp' you know!!! Not that old chestnut...

Ally dials were standard on those cars that came from the factory with them but optional on those cars that came with black dials but had them subsequently replaced either with the later TVR ally dials or with dials from Levant Tech or Zertec or in the case of some cars that had new custom dashes fitted in which case the ally dials are not really standard but specials because they didn't appear on the optional price list, not forgetting that there was a changeover period starting with the first Chimpari in 1993 through to the last one in 2002 where the dashboard layout and styles were constantly changing so again some cars had optional dashes while others that had the optional dashes were in fact standard or specials. As a result, most cars have ally dials and some don't.

Does that clarify things?

In summary... They started with black went went to ally over quite a long period so there is no real definitive absolute cutoff date. Typically 1994 ish.

the black surrounds can indeed be paint stripped and polished as previously stated. the heater control wheels can be replaced with later ones, available from TVR for £30-35. just done it myself and only requires dash top removal, 3 nuts and a bit of contortionism, as per bible, takes a couple of hours then have a long soak in the bath with a beer or ten.
cheers Al.

Early '94 the cars had revised dials with the chrome bezels then mid to late '95 they were joined by the revised heater and light switches and nicer warning lights.

You can buy all the parts you need to convert to a later spec' but they are very expensive. If you buy from a crashed car remember to buy the actual dashboard panels as well. The wiring for the switches is also different so not a straight swap.

Looked at a 5.0 with a digital read out as you say only a few. apparently they go wrong alot and have to be re-chipped at a cost of around £150. so I'm told by a realable source.

Thanks for the tips guys.

They've all got digital mile counters!
How else can it be shown?
