Hi Everyone,

New to this forum so go easy on me...my wife has got a nissan micra 2002 1.0L hatch which has started to struggle to start first thing in the morning (the engine turns over and doesn't start...or it starts and you have to press the accelarator down to get the engine to tick over for a few seconds otherwise it stalls).

Took it to a garage today thinking it would be the starter motor but the mechanic said it was the ECU...which would cost me around £600 to put right (get a new ECU from nissan etc.).

Pretty shocked that I would have to spend £600 on a 2002 plate micra

a) Has anybody come across this problem before?
b) Is there a cheaper way of getting this sorted (i.e. do I have to get the ecu changed - also could I potentially just buy one from a breakers yard as opposed to get a new one from nissan?)

Any help greatly appreciated...got made redundent last month and am fairly young so struggling to make ends meet and this is the last thing I needed.

Thank you.

First things first, I'll be amazed if it's the ECU.

I don't know a thing about Micras but that doesn't sound like a software/firmware problem. What garage did you take it to?

Get a second opinion from a different garage, ideally a main dealer.

I think it'll be a sensor personally. Cold start, air flow/mass or engine temp being favorites. If it's not electrical I'd be looking at a filter, particularly if you've skimped on servicing. Fuel filter would be the main suspect here.

You can get second hand parts cheap, delivered and guaranteed from www.247spares.com but I seriously doubt a spare ECU will help you.

Thanks for the reply. I took the car to an independent nissan specialist and he showed me some kind of print out with the words "ECU Diagnostic Fault" or something. I'll try your suggestion and get a second opinion as the problem has only arisen recently after almost 4 years of trouble free ownership.

Many thanks for your help.

Hi Guys,

An extension on my original question - someone at work mentioned that you can read of ecu faults using the diagnostic computer and a paperclip - counting the number of times an lcd flashes.

Anyone have details on where i can find the diagnostic computer pin thing on a micra 2002 ? (or should I not even attempt it?).

Cheers,
