I'm in Lincs this weekend to work on the '2. First thing was to fire it up and look around it. Noise was the same as before, maybe louder. Took the risk and crawled up to toyota with it banging away like a cement mixer full of bricks.

The ever-helpful people at my local dealership slotted it in right away so I chucked them the keys and went for a quick lap of the Nurburg ring on their showroom PS2.

Eventually the nice man returns and tells me the bad news;

"There's nothing wrong with it"

Me and my Dad look at him like he's crazy but follow him into the workshop, sure enough the MR2 is sat there purring like a kitten.

Hmmm...

The Toyota mechanic says he didn't touch anything but he has tried reving it a few times. I do the same but there's just no noise at all.

A short (and very careful) trundle around the local country lanes shows up nothing, a slightly faster run has the same effect. Eventually a banzai launch with a run up through the gears still fails to give any hint of a problem.

We report back to Toyota completely baffled and ask for some prices (cambelt, waterpump etc).

On the journey home it starts to gently whistle, this builds up a loud rubbing noise. Grrr... They've shut now so I can't take it back again.

I've popped the cam cover off now and the outside (drivers side) edge of the timing belt has clearly been rubbing on something. Maybe a pulley has come apart? I have no idea really.

Does anyone else???

I had the oil pump pulley come lose, and was moving about and bashing into the front of the cam cover. This gives a nasty banging, like a tappet but a lot louder and lower down in the engine.

With this moving, it was making the timing belt run out of line and was chafing on the cam cover.

To properly fix it would have cost around 2 grand as the whole engine would need to come out and a new oil pump drive, Oil pump and pulley would need to be installed. Instead I got it helicoiled and a new pulley put in for around £400. It has been ok although I am keeping an ear out for any further knocking noises.

This was on my MK3 Supra.

Well, coincidentally I had a noise coming from the bottom of my engine, seriously close to where one, if one were really paranoid, might expect ones' oil pump to be. I also have a severely chafed cambelt on one one side.

Not sure it sounded like a tappet though, more like a heat shield cooling after a hard run, that sort of crack/CLINK noise you get sometimes, or maybe a bit of loose belt slapping around.

It's stopped now anyway. I've done 20 or so miles at various engine speeds and it hasn't come back.

Mad car.
