Just wanted to cap off a great weekend by saying hello in my first post...

Picked up my first Porsche (a 1991 944 Turbo - advertised on PH) on Saturday in Gloucester. It had only done 600 miles in the last nine months, and I bent (alot) some of the rules on purchasing: didn't get it up on a lift, didn't drive it myself etc, etc. I basically listened to the "you'll know a good one when you see it" inner logic. As far as I know I was only one to make the trip to inspect it, and when I got there it was:
In better condition than every other 951 I had seen (I did 4 that week), it had done less miles, and it cost less money.

So you can imagine, what I thought as I drove it away - there must be be a huge catch here!!!

So, bearing in mind I had virtually no experience with this vehicle, and little experience with 944s in general I decided not to flat-bed the thing back to Manchester where it would ultimately end up that evening - I drove it to Portsmouth, carefully. Then I drove it to J17 on the M6, quickly. Then I ran through the back roads inbetween Holmes Chapel and Alderley Edge (Past Jodrell Bank), hard.

It put not a foot wrong throughout, it did 380 miles to a tank, it hasn't produced a drop of oil from anywhere, and any muscles involved in upturning the corners of my mouth are hurting.

But it does have its idiosyncracies which I thought I would share with everyone to get some feedback:

1) After a while the oil pressure gauge gets bored and decides it would be tons more fun to mimic the tachometer...

2) The clock works fine in the day - but you need nightvision to read it after dark.

3) Its white, which is cool thanks to apple - hence the nickname. Naturally, it will need another set of wheels for summer/winter driving (thats how I am selling this), and obviously they should be black. Looking for some input on which Porsche wheels take the clour change best - for the 951 naturally.

Sorry for the essay - I will book the car into Hartech this week and have them do a 24,000 mile checkup, where they will probably tell me its been crashed, chipped and clocked...

1) Sounds like a crap earth for the oil pressure gauge.

2) Only a bulb surely?

3) Black wheels sound good, perhaps in a matt finish?

Congrats and welcome to PH

I agree about the guage, probably a bad sender or bad earth.
The clock - i think they all do that, certainly those people i know who have had 944's have also had no backlight on the clock. I can only assume the bulb is difficult to get to.

You have an oval dash model right? Have you found the trip reset yet?

It's a Turbo, they're all oval dash (waits to be contradicted by the Porsche engineer who designed the square-dash turbo....)

As for the clock, this site has a great How-To (click on Garage Shop Manual / Clock Removal and Replacement)... Clicky Link to Clarks Garage

Cheers

I found the trip reset! I feel I should get a certificate or something... even with the manual spread on the steering wheel it took me a few moments! Why would they build the 944 with such a random odometer reset?!?!?!?

Answers on a postcard please... where is it in the 911?

Ash, that trip reset's a great conversation piece ain't it?

Don't worry, borrowed my mate's 2.7 Lux one day and when i went to fill it up i spent 15 minutes in the petrol station trying to figure out where the trip reset was...

911? Same as most cars, a pointy stick in the clock face.

"they all do that" the chorus cries. dont worry about it. oil reading will be nearly 5 when you first start the engine, then after a youve been driving for a bit, and everything is warm, the needle will hover around or just under 3 at idle and will rapidly move up to 5 again when you increase revs. its normal.

Try loe bank motors in edenfield ,Chris sanderson the owner knows everything! Also lodge sports in gorton they are a bit cheaper and know the 924 944 range as they used to race the 924.Hartech are very very thorough so your first bill can be a shock.I had my 944 serviced there a couple of times.

Good choice on white ... but if you really want to follow Apple's creative lead then you need a set of lime green decals and wheels Go on, you know it makes sense

Lime decals and Wheels? Hmmm sounds like the extremely rare 944 Club Sport radiation spec, production run of, er... one.

I am thinking of buying some Cup 1 Alloys from somewhere like Design 911 and having them chromed black. I don't know if I can bolt those wheels straight on to a stock 951 though...

Oh, I have some more "idiosyncrasies" to give you from the last few days with the i-porsche:

1) It seems that about 10 seconds after starting/pulling away in the morning I get a 3-5 second whirring noise from behind the dash. It doesn't sound ominous... but it probably didn't do it off the forecourt. Something to do with the steering????

2) If the car has been standing for a while, i.e. overnight, the first movement is greeted by a 'clunk' from the off side rear quarter. The sound can be repeated by driving through a sweeping right hander on an uneven road surface. I am presuming that it is either the off-side rear suspension or the Back box that is to blame, but I cannot replicate the sound on speed humps. This clunking can turn into a slightly worrying creaking noise on the odd occasion and is actually quite loud. (I originally suspected that a loose component on the underside of the car was "playing" the silencer like a drum). I am now wondering if the offside handbrake shoe could produce such an effect... This does need seeing to - Tony Greatorex will get the call as Hartech are booked up into July - unless someone can offer an innocent explanation or quick fix...

I have a set of original 16 x 7 and 16 x 9 Porsche 944 Turbo SE forged wheels for sale. PM me if you are interested. Sorry for the shameless plug.

The whirring behing your dashboard in all likeliness is your ABS performing a self-check. Nothing to worry about.
