trouble selling old C4
Discussion
old but not a dog - not wanting to re-tread the old ground of the values on 996/993/964s -
but....
I have been trying to sell my '89 C4 for a few months now - first by the classifieds here then I have had it in at eporsch on a commision sale basis
classified go a couple of bites but no sale and (according to roly at eporsch) he has had a few callers but, again no conversion
the car had a write up in the tried and tested of this months 911 & Porsche world which was very complimentry. the issue also had - spookily - a 964 buyers guide and a special on the history of 4wd porsches -
Fantastic I think, surely it will sell now..... but the mag has been out for three weeks or so but still no joy -
at the moment it looks like I would be lucky to get 10 grand back off it, which would be OK but i just cant believe the slowness of the market. - is it a slow market? is it overpriced? or am I just being unlucky?
anyone else having trouble?
At this rate, I might just have to hold on to it and wait for it to start appreciating in value.... (just let me try to convince the other half of the economic merits of it - all positive arguments gladly recieved!)
Cheers,
BERGS

Berg, no idea.
As you know, I am in regular contact with the two previous owners and can vouch that the car is very special for a 964 of that age. Couldn't do much more with the PR either, having it as a featured car in 911PW (bought a copy for a previous owner!).
Some people are missing a real bargain. When I see forum members harp on about 944 cabs for a similar budget - or even 968s and 3.2s - I really do think the world's gone nuttier than Peter Crouch's dancing! Your 964C4 in question is leagues ahead, pound for pound.
Yours despairingly

can you point me to your PH ad?
it think it 'fell off' the back end of the PH classified (they do after 60 days, IIRC)
I'm starting to really think that I will be best off hanging on to it - I'm just really surprised that the 911&PW PR has not shifted it...
leaves me with the small matter of how to raise a few thousand to pay for a kitchen???

Just echoing hoges11 comments - what will trade give you for it?
£10k might not seem like a lot, but after 2 months then I think it's time to get what you can if you're serious about selling.
have not tried to sell it into the trade to be honest -
When I left it at eporsch on commision sale, the idea was to return more than I would for just trading it in.
ironic really, as henry punted it at £10k trade when i was initially trying to guage the market back in January

One of my customers does great kitchens at good prices, how about an inexpensive kitchen and keep the 911???

Bergs,
I saw your car at Eporsch when I was buying a 968CS and your car is lovely. I did drool a bit looking at it, it looks the mutts nutts, somebody has got to buy it! Buyers shouldn't be put off by LHD, my first 911 was a left hooker and it took about a week to get used to it and then it was no problem driving it.
I did think about buying your car but fancied a change and went for the yellow 968.
10k is too cheap! Keep it and get a cheap kitchen. (I sold my first Caterham last year to fund a kitchen purchase and regretted it ever since)

C'mon Bob, take a trip down South for a shandy!
I've driven to Germany for a 944 Turbo... you can come down the M1 for a 964

I've learnt my lesson!
Picked up a TVR from Milton Keynes once without getting it checked by my mechanic.
I was lucky to make it back at all!
Bring it up here - I'll buy you a hot pot.
Bob.
I think there's a reason for cars not selling, and perhaps its time for the older cars (mine included) to take a price drop to stir up interest. Lets face it, very few cars in this world go up in value, and not many can sustain a level price over many years.
I think the "younger" generation do not have the passion for porsches and are into the offerings from the east. 10K to 15K can buy a lot of newer metal for their money.
A look thru the PH adds will show cars hanging around and not selling so eventally the market will decide.
Of course this may all be a load of rubbish and you sell it this weekend !! Good luck

No, it's a valid point.
But how come a low mileage Clubsport 964RS with impeccable history fetch most of its original value, depsite being 15 years old?
99% of cars depreciate, some like an ACME anvil in an episode of Roadrunner. Others defy these forces.
Even expensive, worthy and well made cars - like Mercedes, BMWs, Audis and Bentleys suffer... that's why you can get an Arnage for 40k or an old Turbo R for 14k... in 1987 that car would have been well into six figures, and I bet it still works pretty well as it was engineered in Crewe from railway girders.
So yes, older cars will tend to drop in value despite the owner's protestations.
A few won't, for mysterious and often unfathomable reasons. They may be illogical, but that is why I would never buy a 968 Sport but I would be happy getting a 968CS.
In ten years time, a 968CS in speed yellow will be three times the price of a 968 Sport in a normal colour. Like a 964RS LHD is worth nearly 3x the price of a LHD 964C2 today. And as the normal cars continue to depreciate the cultsits favourites may even appreciate, or at least hold steady.
The problem is picking the magic cars today
