hey all just picked up my new gt3...o4 1 owner wit 5k road miles...red, full comfort spec. im coming out of a 996tt and instead of going for the same again thought id try a gt3. love the engine...sounds better than the tt and tho it lacks the midrange punch it makes up for it with top end bite!!
the problem came on the way home when i started to open it up properly on my own b roads...it feels like its all over the place at high speed when it finds cambers and ridges...not anywhere near as confidence inspiring as the tt. maybe i'll get used to the 'driving' of it but right now my next car will be a tt again.

Could it be the TT has 4WD and the GT3 rear and a lot lighter ?? I know the bias on the TT is mainly to the rear, but just a thought.

Each to there own and may just take some getting used to. I went from 4WD to rear and thought the same, but after a while would never go back. May have to track it to fully exploit the GT3 and see what it can do, as it is suppossed to reward more than the TT.....stunning car all the same mate. Hope you enjoy.

Just read a comparison of the MK1 & MK2 in Total 911, they implied that the MK2 had a tendancy to do that wondering about a bit.

You could always try loading up the bonnet space with beer to way it down a bit

get the geometry checked asap - makes a big difference, I do mine once a year and makes a big difference to on-road driveability.

Surely its just the rubber on the GT3 thats catching road groves etc ?

Remember the TT is a road car that is a competant track car & a GT3 is a track car thats a competant road car, bumpy B roads are not what it was designed for, the TT was.

yeah thanks guys....the fact is that it is a track orientated car as was stated by rumple so im just going to have to adjust to enjoy!! its going into the opc for its 1st service on fri so wil get then to check out the settings. i think i'll prob get used to it in time and get into another turbo and say 'wheres all the steering feel gone??'
for now i'll just listen to the engine note and stay off the bumpy roads!!!!

- The TT is heavier and, with 4wd, you will get a lot less feedback.
- The 2wd 911s are much more communicative
- Do get the GT3 properly set up for its intended use
- Irish roads?

You're not driving it in it's "natural habitat" My Mk1 fidgets about a fair bit if you get on to choppy B roads.
The front splitter/ bumper decks out frequently when pressing on as well. All part of the fun if you ask me.
On the plus side you should be feeling stuff through the steering wheel (and seat of the pants) that you've never noticed in a TT !
Get the ride heights checked and the geometry set up for road use (if you're not going to track it) that should improve matters.
And finally, steer it with your fingertips not clenched fists !!

Good luck and enjoy the responses of a "proper" (2WD) chassis and N/A engine.

Talk to one of Porsche GB's "technical" guys they seem well up on GT3's.
Part of the affect you are feeling is perhaps down to the diff., they have changed this on the new 997GT3, partly to reduce the very thing you mention!
I think you will probably grow to love the car when you get used to it.

I find with my OPC I need to be very specific on geometry: they don't seem to know much about it, which is why I use an independent for the work.

Strongly recommend checking the tread on your tyres, ensure pressures are 32/39 fr/r (cold) and get the geometry reset to factory standard until you are ready to experiment a bit.

A simple test to check if one of the above is not right is to drive in a straight line with just gentle pressure on the steering wheel and letting go to see if the car pulls to one side.

ok feelin ALOT happier now....went for a 'proper' drive late last night....very impressed....when i really started to push on the whole thing made sense....responses were electric and understeer virtually non existant compared to the tt....and though id growen used to the 'elastic' response of the turbos the noise and instant response of the n/a engine are phenominal.
signing off a satisified gt3 owner.

The biggest difference I noticed when I first drove a 911 was to relax my hands, arms and shoulders.

If your upper body is tense or your grip too tight on the wheel it makes the car really edgy.

Sleep Envy has it absolutely right. I've found that relaxing grip , arms, shoulders makes all the difference in my GT3 Mk.1 .
