I went thru that too Andy ... In fact I think I still am , and I'm going to send my psychologist bills direct to PH ... this web site makes me jump at shadows!!
To be fair though , it's probably a good idea to have a certain amount of psychosis considering the money you've shoved into your new car , and the crazy amounts of bhp you're pushing out of it!
Just for the record , I get the same smell , especially from around the rear wheel arches after a good blast, also get a faint smell of unburnt fuel in the cabin when she's pushin along , I hear that's normal too ....

now i thought i heard the tappets ( do cars still have them ? ), you guys have got me far to jumpy, I used to get in, drive & get out. now I am hearing all sort of noises, I craped it this morning, only to discover there was a transit behind me at the lights, bring back winter so I can close my windows & live in peace.

Ha ha - old diesels can have that effect, you spend five minutes scared whitless only for it to be a diesel!

You probably WILL hear the tappets crackling (well it is pork product!) away for the first 30 seconds on start up .. Not a good time to rev the arse off the engine! (Unless you want to call your house 'Valley of the bouncing valves' ..)

if i drive the car hard, and dont have the a/c on, i can notice what i assume to be burning something.. oil?
anyone else get this on a 996 and so its normal?!
Andy, anyone else get this on a 996 and so its normal?!
Sounds like the known problem with N/A 996's - the left-handed flugelbinder threads in the oil seperator unit tend to break down, allowing hot oil to spill out onto the side of the cylinder head, which gets seriously hot.
Good news is that the part is very cheap (<£60.) DON'T be tempted to settle for one from a LHD car tho' - they have Right Hand flugelbinder threads in them, and it WON'T work.
Bad news is it's an engine out job to replace. If you have Porsche Extended Warranty they *may* cover you for it, but be prepared for a row and a half at your OPC. (See other threads for Porsche warranty issues.)
Do a search on "flugelbinder thread" on google.
Oli.
And I really should stop winding people up like this - it really is cruel of me! Very sorry Andy, must behave, it's almost certainly due to crap being kicked onto the exhaust - exactly as you say! Stop being so paranoid and enjoy the car, it's a damn nice one!)
