Chaps,

An odd thread title, but I have two oil filters in front of me.

One is a Porsche (original parts) 944 item - part number 944 107 201 08.

The other is a VW-Audi (original parts) Mk2 Golf item - part number 056 115 561G.

They look very similar (black, same external dimensions), with the same size and thread of hole on the top. (There is slight differences between the two tops, but I know that not all VW filters look the same in this respect.) Even peering down inside them, the pressure release mechanism appears to be made identically.

Are they interchangable? Could I fit the VW part to my 944 S2?

Oli, not sure, but there are many interchangeable parts between VW and Porsche etc. The 911 headlights up to 964 shape were VW Beetle ones!

Of course, a Porsche part comes with a Porsche part no and a Porsche price!

Although the oil filter internals could be different, it is unlikely. I'd be tempted to check oil pressure before with Porsche part; fit VW part then recheck oil pressure. If all works and much the same, the cheaper oil filter may have done the trick.

Domster,

Thanks - this sounds like good sound advice, which I will probably follow.

Can anyone else confirm whether the two parts are the same, for sure?

Oli.

(ETA: The Porsche item seems to retail thro' ECP for about 2.5x the price of the VW one ... )

Call B & B Components on 01622 677662 and talk to Spencer he's very good on interchangability and sells many OEM parts.
