Best of luck.......

I've taken the bulb out of mine it's just as expensive, but I worry less

If the alternator warning light comes on, then turn off the stereo and pray for the next exit

IF THE OIL LIGHT COMES ON... STOP

Quiet 'failure' - You could have lost the sump plug or oil sender unit - sump plugs have been known to come unscrewed if you catch them on a bump wrong. The oil then poured out and made the stink on the 'zorst, since you were travelling at speed on the motorway it's bound to have splattered all over the underside/rear of the car.

Loud failure - Loud = bad.

Even with the quiet failure option if you've been driving with a dry engine you might have semi wrecked it.

Good luck.

On a positive note however if it was running fine when you stopped you might have got away with it and just had enough oil in it to stop permanent damage!!

1000 miles in six months? Poor thing gave up though under-use! Done 3000 in 1 months in mine! Thought I may aswell get my money's worth!

Seriously though, not sure whats wrong (probably cracked sump or gasket or somefink), but it all depends on how long the car was running with no oil, and how much damage was done. If there was no noticeable rattling (and it obviously didn't cease) you may be lucky.

I'm no expert, but I did have the same thing in a previous car, and I ran it too long with no oil, and it ended up with a ceased valve, bug**ed big ends, and bent push rods. To pricey to fix for a £500 car, so it's still sitting in the car park!

Anyhow, my heart goes out to you sir, best of luck!

You drove down the slip road onto the motorway while smelling burning oil? Perhaps you should get your sump plug checked while you're at it
