Can anyone recomend a good dealer/specialist/source for 356b/c coupe's, I know they aren't exactly common but I'm having difficulty finding any reference material. I'm at the very early stages of my search, so am after an idea of prices, quality, common issues etc...

any help gratefully received

Cheers Dan

Thanks Simon...

Looks like there are alot more soft tops than coupe's and not surprisingly most seam to be in the US.

I guess it's a question of getting on the forums and getting to know the right people

gmund cars in North Yorks have got two on their site, a very gorgeous Red Speedster at £75K, it is stunning!!! A very nice white cab at £46K and they have just taken in a very nice looking Red coupe, don't think it has a price yet though.

The sweet primose yellow '60 super, here www.early911.co.uk/html/sales.html would be on my list...although its POA, ominously.

And there's a 356 forum on www.rennlist.com which is pretty freindly for advice, but is US based.

Its worth looking on some of the old VW forums/sites as these cars are popular with that scene as well.

A couple to get you started (beware - mouth watering)

Dan,

I have a 1958 356 A cabriolet - I bought it 5 years ago and it took
5 years restoring , the chap who managed this is Mike Smith
he probably knows more about the marque than anyone -he sourced the
Jim Clark ( for those who dont know the greatest racing driver ever )
356 restored it and it now races at the Goodwood revival meeting most years
he knows where all the good and bad cars are
his company is based in Brentwood Essex . P.R Services 01277 630099
last time I was there I saw 2 Speedsters and a 2 356 Carreras !!!

ask for Paul or Mike ( say tim sent you )

PS- Great cars - I have as much fun driving the 356 as I do the GT3 RS

all the best

tim

I saw a cute little late model 356 on the autobahn the other day. I was in my 993 so gave a thumbs up!
It was immaculate and I was suprised just how fast he was driving it.
In the 50s and 60s when there were Jaguar XK 120, 140s, Corvettes and other ostentaious fast powerful cars, I can only imagine that the little Porsche must have been viewed as a sort of contemporary "Lotus Elise" of its day?

Then what was the appeal of the 356? You sound like you're old enough to remember

theres a tiny 'under the arches' garage on tower bridge road, london. possibly called tower porsche. he had a few 356's in last week, looked awesome even under deep layer of dust! he has 1 coupe that looked brand new for 30k sticker price (recent 35k restoration!)
