During our run from clacketts lane services today to VW.I noticed a lot of signs depicting speed cameras, but couldnt see them.On arriving at VW a mate of mine and fellow piston head Kev North ,said the speed cameras were mounted on bridges over looking the motorway. On the way back he counted seven in total.Does any one know if these are operational. As most of us drifted over the speed limit,we could all be in for a lot of unwanted post in the next few weeks. Can madcop give any advice.

We did the same today, I you think back you were probably travelling at relatively the same speed as the majority of the other road user's, our convoy of two were about 80ish, We should (fingers crossed) be alright. I think they only look for exceptions on the cameras and trigger the next ones (hopefully).

Ive not recieved anything through the post when driving at the same speed as the rest of the traffic through the speed signs and I do it almost every week. I used to see camera flashes going off all the time, but these days not so frequently.

If you are referring to those on the M25 gantries, they are normally activated when the temporary enforcable limits are showing. I would not worry yourselves unduly although you can never be too sure!

They were not fairly small and dark blue were they???, If so they are traffic master cameras and do not measure speed but flow of traffic, if they were not well highlighted i.e. yellow then you should be ok!!!

when i worked inside the M25 i was told that the cameras were set at variable speed + 20mph or
99+ normally or
90 mph during a purge (70 = 20)

all the above are guaranteed court cases so people will always take the points but can be sought after by old bill if required.

having seen quite a few speeders "popped" and many "slip thru" i would say tis rule is pretty accurate.

(its always worked for me )

reason being that they get THOUSANDS of offenders at the lower levels clogging up the system, so the levels were set to the above to catch the "real" speeders

should be ok.

levels can be set tighter if crews are working near traffic flow...were there any?

This just about sums it up ..... however, if you went through any whilst the enforcable, variable limits (electronic display with red circle surround) were showing then you may be in for a heaverly laidened postie?

Oh dear... Don't wish to bring doom and gloom to anyone but I work in Egham and that M25 section is my daily route to work. If the temp speed signs are up then the cameras are on.

See loads of people getting flashed all the time through there, I won't even go 1 mile an hour over the limit when the speed restrictions are on.

Don't know what speed you'll get done at... hopefully everyone will be OK

We talked about this whilst hoofing it up the M25. The datum lines on the road indicate that the cameras are Gatsos, don't they? And don't Gatsos flash? No flashes as we went through (sub 90).

RG - if there wasn't a variable speed limit, and you didn't see any flashes (although they are hard to spot as they are so far up and if it's daylight you don't see the flash on the ground) then you should be fine.

Guillotine is about right - I've seen people get flashed at about 95-100+ with no speed limit set (estimated), so if you were under 90 (probably actually 85 by the time your speedo is taken into account) you should be fine.

If it's the M25 cameras you're worried about then don't fret. With no limits going they don't flash to well over 90mph (in my experience) and you do notice the flash.

That's right. They're not designed to be speed cameras as such, they're designed to keep traffic moving by enforcing sub-70 speed limits. As such they don't generally enforce when a temporary speed limit is not in place.

Bear in mind that they are, however, capable of enforcing the National Speed Limit (NSL) so this could change.

I've not spotted as many flashes on the M25 as I used to on the variable speed sections, perhaps the ruling on "if you want the dosh don't hide your cameras" has stopped them being used as much...

Got flashed once myself well in excess of the limit, and nothing came of it thankfully, but I generally follow the rule of keeping less than 30mph over the limit.

They were definitely on as I was picking them up on the Valentine - however I know for a fact thses things only activate at about 99mph (as already suggested) - there were only about 3 gantries working though near and around jct13.....no flashes seen and these are still gatso's as far as I have heard....
