The Haynes manual gives the hub nut torque value for stub axles with multiple split pin holes as 150ft lbs, and for axles with a single split pin hole as 180-200ft lbs then, if required, further tighten until it is possible to insert the split pin. All my Minis have single hole stub axles and just about every time I have had to replace the hub nut after maintenance, at 180ft lbs the split pin hole is just disappearing behind a "lug" on the nut. At 200ft lbs the nut has barely moved and this is just about at the limit of my torque wrench! I hate to think what torque value would be required to get the split pin hole to line up with the next gap in the castellated nut! Is this high torque necessary and why is it different to the multi-holed stub axles? I usually end up backing off the nut slightly rather than further tightening it. Any one got any views on this subject?

Just lightly linish the face of the hub nut and it will line up nicely at 150 lb.ft.
