Why is this so threatening to some of you?

For goodness sake man!
And it's a closed topic as well now?
This forum (this hsv.org.uk) is a big hitter with all the right manufacturers and sponsors, his is a little tiddler and is actually more about general banter etc.
I really don't think it's a threat and the general responses to the post would indicate that.
I think I understand why you did it but I'm also sure that a little e-mail to Paul (extremecapture)would've sufficed and I'm also sure he'd have apologised.
I think this is an over-reaction.

This forum is hosted by and is part of Pistonheads.com which includes many other car and non-car specific forums inlcuding light hearted banter sections and is the owner's business. Asking the poster to contact the owner before linking his own site in is the courteous way to do it and the way other people have done so in the past. He can still contact the owner as mentioned in the other thread - www.pistonheads.com/gassing/profil - if he would like to promote his site here.

No issue with that, it's the closing of the topic that irked me tbh, it seemed a little petty in my eyes.
Anyway, have said my bit now, it's between Paul & Ted.
Knowing what kind of advertising $ is available to forums such as this and observing the growing popularity of this forum along with tyresmoke etc, its easy to assume that anyone who steams in offering a list of things that can already be found here, with no arguments for why its any better than this one, is simply looking to create competition.
I wouldnt blame anyone for finding it an afront, slightly presumptious and a little suspicious.
The reaction he got is what close communities do when they feel threatened. If you ask me, thats more proof of how good this forum is.

Woha, this has caused a bit of debate hasnt it.
Firstly, i would like to apologise to all those here reference me posting about my new forum. I started that thread, and this is the only reason, to try to make a overall forum that could be used by HSV owners, where all different subject matters are covered on one opening page, very much like scoobynet, for which i have been a member for many, many years.
There was, and is no financial gain to be had by myself in doing it. I am a photographer by trade, and studio owner and find that i get quite a bit of free time available to me, and as these forums are not expensive to get started, i thought, why not!
So, there ya go. Sorry, i should have asked first-apologies !
But in my defence, i think the more exposure to our favourite vehicles should be a good thing.
Anyway, i shall get me coat........

Well a few more separate sections would be good to separate out general chat from technical and dress-up mods. Otherwise the community is too small to spread out.
Ted said its possible to split out the HSV like TVR is here if required.
In a free capitalist society its competition that moves things along. Otherwise we would go and live in North Korea where they censor and ban everything!
