Jeremy C lets the side down...Beaten by Porkers !
Discussion
I think I've made all my excuses here.
The main problem was the speed at which I could enter the runway; we started the other side of a wide 180 degree bend so that we carried speed onto the start of the runway. The only Porkers that were faster were 4WD (in fact only 4WD twin turbos were faster) and consequently could get the power down earlier out of the bend. Our professional passenger-ride-blagger iguana reckons that the rashers were carrying 15-20mph more onto the start of the runway.
Perhaps with more practise I'll be able to achieve higher speeds - I was still accelerating through the speed trap. It is certainly something to be recommended to all if you get the opportunity - great fun.

Jeremy,
Listen buddy, although I'm a pig pilot these days, let me empathise with this situation.
I know from a past life exactly what the prob here was and you're spot on.
Fact is, in a reasonably straight line, factoring out what you say about entering the straight from a corner, a 4.5 Cerb or a Tuscan would be there or there abouts...or beyond.
I always remember with great fondness, the savage urge my old 4.5 had above 130, 140; in Europe in 1999, I was absolutely caning the bleeder on the relevant sections and frankly, it was proper warp speed stuff.
The difference, particularly with 996 PSM-enhanced 4wd technology is that through the corners, you're doing incredibly well to be even in the contest! But hey, the same reality would affect a bloody Diablo, say, so it's hardly a downer for the Cerberatic Convention!
Indeed, last night, in the beetle - which is supposed to be almost indominatable on the roundabouts, etc - I was taken aback by the tenacity of a MkIV Golf GTi as it fairly wallopped round the aforementioned traffic island; even in my 4wd mobile, I had to adopt the Peter Wheeler personal traction control system to possibly avoid lairy sideways-dom, i.e. restraint on the old right hoof!
You'd have had the same situation with a hot Jap mobile too but frankly, it's all so subjective and the tactile delights of various cars so multifarious that it ain't worth too much introspection.
And btw, Jezza, I still swoon over your motor.
