The wife's due in Feb so I'm selling most of the ridiculous collection....and buying something sensible.grumpy I'm tighter than a ducks ricker, and will fall on my sword before getting a Renault Megane Scenic.

Is an Impreza wagon practical enough for all the pushchairs and crap, dog etc? Will child seats fit in it?

It is some six years since I owned an Impreza (saloon) and I seem to remember that they are relatively small. I think it will be prudent for me to get a WRX or an Sti to prevent me from being tempted to start playing with it to go faster....

Not sure on how much useable boot space Impreza wagons have for that sorta stuff, they're not too small though. Probably easiest to have a look at one at a dealers as everyone has a different idea of what big is. If they do turn out to be too small for you, try a Legacy instead - Imprezas bigger, more refined brother, available in 280bhp turbo versions, and if a Legacy wagon doesn't have enough boot space for you then you may as well buy a transit.

A friend of mine bought a new Impreza wagon a few weeks ago ..... I've ridden in it for a few days and on a long motorway journey to the Lakes and back.

The boot is really quite small ..... smaller than a Focus hatchback IIRC. The handling was superb (obviously ). My overall impressions were that it was very quick ... but also had a teeth-jarringly hard ride ( even on the motorway ) and the boot was pretty tiny. I'm personally considering a Legacy estate to replace what I have now.

I'm torn between the two. I think that I'd prefer the Legacy, but the missus thinks that they are dull... It is hard to find a manual Legacy too. Wouldn't contemplate an auto, that's why I'm selling the S8!

I would suggest the Legacy or equivalent. The Impreza is fine once your kid is a bit more independent but when they are new a Tardis would be too small for all the crud you need to take with you. Unless your dog is a chihuahua it'll be very cramped in the back with a pram and associated crud as well. Also, just in case you're new to all this parenting mallarkey, whatever you get it must have wipeable seats. very few Imprezas do.

I'm considering a Legacy instead of the S4 avant I was otherwise thinking of.

Bearing this in mind...

What's the version to go for? Looking at a budget of about 18-20k

How much can the turbo be tuned? Otherwise is there a huge differnece between that and the 3 lite spec B?

I own a 99 Impreza wagon and have 2 children, the boot is bigger than your average hatch and I found I got everything in that I needed for a week holiday, just. I would say it is a little small for a family but I like the size as I live in the wilds of north Norfolk and spend half my driving life on small b roads and I simply would not want anything bigger, but having said that sometimes a Legacy sized vehicle appeals very much. Perhaps I am getting old but something a bit cruisier as well as an Impreza is appealing to me more and more.

The grey import twin turbo has approx 300bhp the 3.0 Spec B uk car has 230bhp, both chew fuel so you takes your choice, IMO I think the new Legacy is a very smart car.
Or you could try the mad Forester STi although I think that would be slightly out of your budget, approx £25k I think.

Where is a good place to look at these/buy them? Grey import sounds good as the 3litre sounds a bit light on the power.

I'd like a low or sub 6 0-60 as a minimum

Do they still sound like a proper scooby?

Think the legacy is a little too subtle in the look department as well - Are the grey import turbos a bit meaner looking?

here you go, he has an excellent reputation: www.litchfieldimports.co.uk/

apparently the new ones sound just as throbby! they have a 2.5ltr engine so you get a bit more low down torque

I'm expecting twins soon and I decided to sell my Supra an impreza wagon. I personally think there is loadsa space in the back and it is also quite a small car which is great for finding parking spaces. I did consider the forester but I too think it looks dull and they are huge?!?!

The Forester is actually based on the Impreza chassis so isn't much longer or wider at all, just taller and looks bigger.
