i have just received my 'please extend your warranty' letter from BMW for my mini cooper s. Now normally I wouldn't bother with an extended warranty but this car has had to go back to the dealership several times in the last 11 months for warranty work. So I am after an aftermarket warranty that is going to be as good as the BMW offered one but less than the £640 that BMW want.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Warranty Direct ones are supposed to be good, my cousin has one on her MCS. Never had to use it so don't know if it's actually any good. Supposed to cover wear and tear as well.

Ask on www.mini2.com

Doesn't exist. The original manufacturers warranty will be the best bet. Try doing a search in a few of the other forums (especially the Porsche one) and read the misery tales of warranty company's refusing to pay for work due to a whole host of get out of jail clauses that are hidden deep in the small print. There are also plenty of examples of manufacturers making some positive exceptions to some wear and tear items and making a contribution to a few claims to keep the relationship between them and the owner on an even keel. Personally I wouldn't touch a car without a manufacturers warranty on it.

You pay your money you take's your choice.

Thanks guys.

The problem with the BMw offered one is that they want me to pay an excess of £100 per warranty claim. If I had done it this year it would have cost me nearly £700 in 'warranty' work. I know places like Warranty direct probably have similar clauses but i would like the piece of mind that having a warranty gives me.

Also, has anyone had a software reset due to a fault and been charged for it? I was charged for a software reset, now I thought that would have been covered under warranty.

You were charged for a software reset, that's outrageous yikes

I believe most warranties from third parties have an excess (some are up around the £300 level or more) with them as that would stop multiple claims for simple issues where the car owner and garage owner work together to get the work covered. I don't believe that manufacturers warranties should have an excess but BMW put one on a while back after getting multiple claims at thousands of pounds a go for the double vanos failures on it's M series engines.

Hope you find something that suits you soon but yet again it appears us motorists are getting shafted in some way or other for enjoying our cars.
