Recently got myself a 1.9 TDI A4 Avant. Never had an Audi or a diesel before. Fantastic car however it takes about 15 mins to warm up in the morning. As soon as I leave my house I hit a traffic jam and sit there for 10 mins+, all this time the engine is cold, it takes a further 5 minutes+ when I get onto the motorway for it to get to normal temp. Is this just a diesel thing/ Audi thing?

Diesels take longer to warm up than petrols usually. I know that if HGV are sitting idling the temp actually goes down. My Audi has an auxillary heater setting than runs with the climate control to warm it up a bit quicker.

This is quite normal for the 1.9 TDI. They have an Aux heater which warms the coolant in cold weather making the heater much more reactive. My A4 TDi takes a long time to warm up in just the same way, but the heater chucks out warm air aftre only about a mile or so on cold mornings.

Yes, this is completely normal. I'm on my 3rd 1.9 TDi; they are slow to wake up.

they do take a while as the have a big viscous (spelling) fan drawing cool air through the rad, this is why when idling they cool down ;-) 15mins sounds a little to long I would get the thermostat checked.

A little tip , turn off the aircon as that will also turn off the electric cooling fan that comes on when the aircon is activated.

Its all to do with thermodynamic efficiency. The 1.9 TDI engine is so good at taking energy from the fuel that little is left over as waste heat.
