personalise my porsche???
Discussion
hi guys,
bit of soul searching advice please..
i've had my 996tt for a few months now and love it. it's everything i hope for in a car and more BUT i've also put my own stamp on each of the cars i've owned from little subtle things to engines conversions except the porsche.
I've done various searches since owning the porsche and i'm trying desperately to be content with the car as it is but i'm struggling.
here's a brief list of my thoughts..
1. I would love to change the exhaust buy worried over potential OPC warranty issues.
2. change the wheels to sporttechno ones but can't justify 2k for porsche ones and worried over sub 1k for copies.
3. thinking about subtle changes to the interior - alloy look hazard surround, ignition surround, set of the alloy look circles for the speedo and guages.
Shile i know someone will post that it's my car and i should do what i want etc etc and that's 100% true i'm worried over making a clean and tidy turbo look like a max power advert and potentially scaring off potential buyers in a few years time.
so what's the excepted 'done thing' if there is one??? not being anal just don't want to spoil what is an amazing car but i do want to make it feel more mine if that makes sense???
thanks in advance
Rick

You could use some thought and only make mods that can be reversed at a later stage

totally agree.
i would never do anything to this car that could not be turned back very easily.
what have other owners done to put theri own stamp on their cars?
Get the ecu upgraded Rick, transforms the car and makes it much more entertaining, next move for me is a new pipe im just not sure which one yet...ECU upgrade in theory is not detectable by the OPC's so should be ok on the warranty.Having said that if an experienced Porsche mechanic cant tell a chipped tt from a standard one on a road test i would be very suprised..do standard tt's hit 1 bar? i would never do anything to this car that could not be turned back very easily.

hi mate, the performance is the main thing i'm happy with. i doubt on uk roads my licence would last long if it was any quicker. perhaps when i've owned the car a couple of years i might be bored and want more then at the moment it's more visually that i want to put my stamp on.

How about a (slightly smaller) Techart steering wheel? I remember reading a website somewhere about a guy in Switzerland (I think) who changed the one on his 996TT and reckoned it was one of the best things he'd done to the car. If I could justify the outlay I think this would be my first move

The dealer can instantly tell a TT has been chipped, it records all maximum values in the ecu memory... and the boost levels and fueling will be obvious. I know a GT2 that was in Reading needing a new engine after being chipped and they even knew the date and time the map had been loaded, so when the owner said he knew nothing about it, he looked a little silly...
If you are going to get it chipped make sure the chip provider is willing to warrant their own work!

I think it all depends on what work is being done, will they see it on a routine service, unlikely knowing an OPC, but if the engine lets go or warranty work is required on the engine and Reading get their hands on it, the first thing they will do is look at the ecu logs.
There is NO way you could hide the changes, all they have to do is download the current map in the ECU and compare it with the original maps for the car, it WILL be different.
Talking to a friend at reading in the training department they are always amuzed that people beleive a turbo map could be changed without the manufacturer knowing, the ecu logs all changes, max min values, % of time at what throttle and loads and loads more. Due to the cost of a replacement engine they use this information to understand the cause of failure, on going R&D and a 3rd party map will definately be noticed.
I'd put money on Porsche GB being able to spot any massaged ECU, I can probably arrange a trial if anyone is interested and convinced they can beat the Porsche full ecu diagnostics system?

I would have thought getting the thing to sound better would be near top of mosts lists, I heard good things about these for 996tt sports boxes:
tubi
techart
cargraphic
tubi
techart
cargraphic
changing the exhaust was top of my wish list but asking posting on hear and speaking to my opc i am worried over potential opc warranty issues. basically from what i';ve been told IF the exhaust led to something going wrong OPC would not cover that item. i do however (and would) love to stand corrected if anyone know's better.
as for dms / ecu upgrades - i like most owners i imagine only explore a fraction of the tt's potential on road and track days don't take my fancty anymore. i used to do max 3 per month in my elise a couple of years back.

Was tempted to get my car remapped by DMS but a chat with my local Indy persuaded me otherwise. Not a tech guy so didn't understand half of the explanation but he said that a remapping may not show on a standard diagnosis of a car. However, OPC's can definitely spot a remap if they are specifically looking for it and in case an engine blows etc they will.
Then its a question of who is to blame, whose warranty covers what etc but in the end that's not a fight I want to be involved in...

that does sound intetesting..
send 3 cars up all tt's all same years and have 1 with a dms or likewise upgrade and see what they find but without road testing the cars...
