Im currently looking at buying a used MINI Cooper S and was wondering whether I should have any reservations about looking at an 03 model with 60000Kms ( I live in the middle east) that has fallen out of warranty? Are they are nasty costs I should be looking out for?

Also does any one have any experience with BMW's goodwill structure for out of warranty assistance?

at the end of the day it's a pretty basic reliable car. warranty claims always seem to be for squeaks and rattles, dropping windows that sort of thing. the gearbox is ZF(i think??) and they don't bust. the engine is seven thousand years old and made of lead and they don't really knacker up..!
from people i know bmw are worse with warranty issues than vwfor an equivalent cost car. but i do not have personal experience.

definitely check on MINI2 as i am sure there'll be middle east people who can advise you...

I do and if I were you the 500 odd quid that the warranty will cost is well worth the investment....

As Baskey says there’s not much that goes wrong with them, but I wonder how many times they will give you a good will gesture when the windows drop again and again and again... (Which happened on mine 4 times, every time it had been 'fixed')

The gearbox is rather old in design but trust me the clutch isn’t exactly bomb proof esp the flywheel...

I was rather saddened by the lack of build quality in them and felt like if every time I went into a dealers I was the problem and not the car.

Problems happened to me was

Windows dropping
Car unlocking itself?
Door not releasing when using the key fob
Idle gear issues
Release bearing issues
Loose cable under the car, which meant when I reached a certain speed on the motorway a loud whirring noise, could be heard.

I had a 53 cooper s, and tbh it was a great car, fun and loads of usable power.

But I simply wasn’t happy that every few months the car had a problem especially as I decided against the warranty when it came up in September and had to do a rethink on the costs of expected problems.. hence why I no longer have it.

As the mechanic in the dealer said if you didn’t have this warranty, us taking your gearbox apart to diagnose the problem would cost YOU small fortune..

I’m sure im in the minority (I hope I am actually) and most who post on these types of thread will be ones that have had predominantly bad experiences but there’s no hiding from the fact in my experience the MINI wasn’t hassle free and could (without the warranty) cost a lot of money to repair any further issues.

I would visit MINI2.com and see what they say

Hope that helps
