Thinking about a starion as a cheap track day toy – they are cheap as chips, rwd with lsd (I think). Is there any interchangability with Evo parts – e.g. brakes, wheels engines etc? There always seem to be lots of second hand evo parts on ebay – could be a cheap way to upgrade?

In a word... no.
I enquired about this before buying my 205, their are parts out there, but nothing bolt on directly from an EVO. I've got a load of links at home for clubs, forums and parts places that i'll post up if I remember tonight. What I found was that a 2.0 Turbo narrowbody would make the best track slag as the 2.0 Turbo is very similiar to the 4G63 lump in early EVO's execpt it's a SOHC IRC, and the narrowbody is the lightest version of the Starion, although the widebody looks loads better.

The 2.6 seems to be an unreliable unit, mainly used in America, which as it happens is where most of the upgrade parts come from in terms of suspension and brakes.

You are right in that they all came with a decent amount of poke, RWD and LSD as standard.

Ahaa, remembered tonight

UK Starion Owners Club - www.austarion.com/index.php
Australian Starion Owners Club - www.austarion.com/index.php
Online manual - www.tristarion.com/htmlman/
American Parts Company - www.overnightautoparts.com/mitsubishi-starion-sta-t-001.html

And below is some information I gathered from a chap called Oscar Ortega in America who supplies parts for the Starion. You should find him on the UK Owners Club forums, but he makes and sells most6 of the stuff you'd want in a track day Starion, enjoy the read :-)

STRIPING THE CAR
This will not gain you too much speed on the track UNLESS you will be going PRO, personally I have a FULL interior and sound system in my track car. Since its a road car as well I need my conforts and tunes =) I just make up for the added weigh in power and handling upgrades.

RACING SEATS
This is a bit tricky but it can be rather easy. ANY race seat will work but some moding or re-drilling of the original mounts may be required to make them strong enough to pass track inspections. Most of the guys here use some off e-bay for USD$150.00ea

ROLL CAGE
At this time I know of only one company that makes the cage for teh Starion BUT I am not sure if it has been discontinued or not. I will have to look into as well. Last time I price it it was close to USD$500.00 for either a "Weld-in" or a "Bolt-In" cage.

UPRATED BRAKES
Here I can offer the ONLY Up-Grade for the Starions available. I designed it and had it patented and had it made specifically for the Starion community. There are aprox 30 of these out there in use INCLUDING the prototype in my track car (In the photod) and not a single complaint other than tyre wear =) (See link bellow for pics and attached pdf file for all info on this KIT I offer)

If the FULL Big Brake kit is not for you I also offer a large range of upgrades for the factory system such as Ceramic pads for the front and semi metals for the rear as well as steel braided lines and Adjustable brake bias systems and also drilled and grooved diks.

UPRATED SUSPENSION
Here's another area were I can offer plenty of support from BOTH my own parts design and manufacturing to aftermarket parts.

- Adjustable Strut tops F&R:
I can offer BOTH FRONT and REAR Adjustable strut tops. (See pics at the link bellow)
The FRONTS are USD$240.00 Posted to your door with Air Mail, the REARS USD$90.00 posted to your door also with Air Mail.

- Adjustable Sway Bar Endlinks, F&R:
I offer these as well with included Poly Bushes. You'll be able to adjust the swaybars for changing track conditions from 50% softer then original to 40% stiffer than original.

- Thicker Swaybars F&R:
These I'll have to look up the current prices but they range aprox in the USD$350.00 range BUT they are available off the shelf

- Eibach Lowering Springs:
These I'll have to also look up the current prices but they range aprox in the USD$375.00 range BUT they are available off the shelf

- Coil Over Springs:
I also can source these coil overs in either single or dual coils. USD$300.00 for the KIT plus posting.

- Replacement Hydrolic or GAS Struts/Shocks:
I am able to source out ONLY KYB Gas struts and shocks Aprox USD$400.00 will get you all 4 PLUS USD$75.00 for Surface ( 6-8 weeks ) posting.

- Replacement ADJUSTABLE GAS Struts/Shocks:
These are aprox. USD$200ea for the Koni's and USD$175ea for the Tokico's or AGX/KYB's These require a spacer for the front housings and a CUSTOM or SHP strut housing for the rear as this IS A TOTAL Custom upgrade.

POLYURETHANE BUSHES:
Assides from the Swaybar endlink bushes the rest are pretty much obsolete and or RARE to find. We had a Group purchace here in the states for some customs one over 2 years ago and ythat was the end of them. I am trying to et them done locally but its an expensive and time consuming process. BUT you may be able to get SOME of them from Noltec Suspensions (I think its www.noltecsuspension.com ) out of Australia

DIFFERENT GEAR RATIOS FOR LSD DIFF:
I can offer several gear ratios to change inside your LSD diff. I can offer 3:90's USD$130.00 (Easily available and will loose aprox 500rpm's), 4:22's USD$250.00 (RARE and will loose aprox 1000rpm's), 4:625's USD$175.00 (Available and will loose aprox 1500rpm's) ALL of these are DIRECT replacements for the originals with the only thing needed is a PRO to make sure its propperly balanced and aligned internally to prevent premature bearing wear. The benefit of these gears is to get up to speed MUCH faster by getting through the revs faster."
