The oil pressure gauge on my car fluctuated between 0 and 30 on a 80 mile blast on the motorway the other day and hasn't impoved since. I've checked the oil level and that's fine but the pressure level hasn't improved. I've read about the possibilities of it being the oil pump not being primed properly in S.Heaths book but could do with some more info. Is it hard to do at home? Should I take it into a dealer? Anyone recommend anyone in the hampshire/Surrey area that could do it for me - Fernies have already got a fortune off me?

Did the low oil warning light come on ?
If not then it may be a duff sensor/leak
I would still be tempted to go to a dealer or specialist as an hour or so's labour is cheaper than a wrecked engine.
Good Luck.

If you've not changed the oil recently, then I doubt it could be a pump thats not primed. Sounds like a dodgy sender. Still, get it checked asafp .

I suspect if you really have low oil pressure you will find out soon enough, as the hydraulic tappets will collapse and the din will be unmissable.

I had this happen twice when the oil pickup pipe came adrift in the sump and it was pumping air instead of oil.

Your problem sounds much more like a duff sender or gauge.

I've just had this same problem on my 99 Chimaera 450 where at idle the oil pressure gauge was indicating zero and never got higher than 15psi.

Turns out it was a dodgy sender, now replaced.

Mine read zero and it was also the sender up the spout.

Mine had exactly the same symptons (oh and a oil leak in the sump) - sender changed & sump fixed at HH on Monday. All happy now
