Hey all.

I was supposed to be returning to Alfa ownership on Friday but just had a phonecall from the stealer...

When jump-starting the car the ABS and airbag warning lights both came on. Turns out a power surge has fried the actuators for both systems. They're unwilling to repair the damage so have just withdrawn their offer of the sale!?!

Any advice? Is this an expensive repair? Could I buy the car damaged and do a repair myself if I can find the parts?

Please help, I'm gutted...

Airbag ECU was £200ish+fitting+VAT a few years ago, several Co's repair them.
Not sure of ABS cost but that'll be MOT failure & not cheap!

Well, I've done a bit of digging and alfa156.net have been really helpful.

Firstly, I'm going to try the 50A fuse which seperates the ABS ECU from the battery. It's £1.50 and I'll thank my lucky starts if that's all it is. After that, I'm going to get an ABS pump and ECU from the breakers for £90. This should cure the problem but I'll need my mechanic to do that one!

As for the airbag light, I'm going to leave that until I get the ABS sorted then try a reset(fingers crossed).Failing that, it'll be an airbag ECU from the breakers for £75.

I'll let you know how I get on...

Fried the actuators? Actuators? Sounds like they are talking crap!

Sure they haven't just sold it to someone else? Automotive electrics are pretty tough, even if correct jump starting precedures aren't followed.

Does the 156 have a CAN bus or conventional loom? THere could be some fried ECUs.

I think it's the CAN bus.

Just going to do a bit at a time until I get it sorted.

It's just typical of Alfa to have a quick glance at a problem, suck their teeth and spout some crap about it being a big job and costing £1500.

Without even checking the fuses etc....
