Went to Brands today and swapped my 1DmarkIIN with 100-400L IS with Joust's 5D and 70-210 f2.8L IS & 2X converter for a very cold hour. My conclusions are probably what you'd expect...my set-up is better for motor sport (although it would have been interesting to use my camera with Justin's lens + converter for a while) and they are on a par for slower shots where milliseconds aren't vital. Straight away the 5D felt nowhere near as robust, and the focusing speed was starting to p155 me off a bit(I've got loads of images where the rear wing is the focal point) And the shutter is chalk and cheese...you really need to use a1D to know what a proper shutter should feel and sound like. No doubt at all I could get used to it, and it is a big step up from my old 20D. The 5D is a great all round camera, and after using one I'm thinking of getting one as a second body...the clarity of static shots is lovely. I just wish they'de build it as a Pro Tank like my 1D.

With the 5D...

Have you got any comparisons using the 1D?

I'm thinking of getting the 5D to compliment my 20D...using the 5D for static shots and a backup....while keeping the 20D (with its 1.6x) and fast shutter for the moving targets (same lens as Joust)

Can't stretch to the 1D jobbies, and if I did, it would make the 20D redundant completely apart from being the backup, whereas the 5D gives a full frame, so fab resolution, and makes great use of wide angle lenses.

Tough choices.

If the sun is high in the sky and very strong it's more blue...when light levels drop it's more green...in strong low sun it goes like chameleon paint.

5D

1D

Taken at the same place with, more or less, the same light.

I only cock up about 1 shot in 20 with the 1D, but it was more like 1 in 4 with the 5D. That purely down to speed of focusing and the fantastic predictive focusing. I think your plan for a 5D and your 20D is a good one, made even better because (correct me if I'm wrong) they take the same batteries.

Using the 70-200 f2.8L IS with a 2X extender is asking a lot for motorsport. As you found, the extender slows down the focussing considerably. You probably also found that it's a mighty sharp combination on the 5D without the extender and the extra stops make a nice bright viewfinder.

Horses for courses etc.

Ta - Indeed the Elise GT1. They produced 7 race cars and one road legal car. Apparently produes 575 bhp at .7 bar boost and 785-815 at 2 bar. All info. from the owner's flyer.

Here's another pic - serious bit of kit.

I also found myself lusting after the slightly more attainable Exige GT3 (I believe this is the "concept", but a road car is due this year (sure others will know more).
