Just thought that I would let all the 968 maniacs out there know that we are making a lightweight solid flywheel to replace the double mass unit on all 968's, should be available in around 6 weeks time: just the job to get the damn things to rev quicker.

Basically Porsche Motorsport used to make one but these are definitely no longer available, the last one was sold early this year. We have looked at the PMS design and decided to go with a one-piece unit that will be a little lighter with a fully CNC machined unit. I expect the cost to be between £700 and £850, but before you all scream "How Much!!?" I will let you know that I have been offered a used one from the States at $2000, sold as seen.

Gotta get these beasties going faster, haven't we?

I thought the 944 flywheels were solid anyway - so wouldn't it be cheaper just to machine a bit off them to make them lighter?

Really not sure about that. I compared an original 968 FW with a 968TRS FW and they are completely different items. The TRS unit is not far from being twice as light as the stock unit.

968 flywheel = double mass = 60mm thick, broken foot if you drop it.

944 flywheel = sold disc 20mm thick = broken toe.

968TRS = sculptured steel flywheel = 60mm thick, does not fit 944S2.

Basic idea is to reduce inertia by binning the dual mass but without making it too light so that it does not drive smoothly, so it is similar in weight to a stock 944 but of course it runs a lighter spring centre clutch instead of the stupid rubber centre of the 944 unit.
If you have a 944S2 and want to reduce inertia, machine a bit off the flywheel and chuck away the centre plate for a racing one.

Where do you get a racing spring centre clutch and how much more does it cost? My car has just covered it's 90,000'th mile and will probably need a new clutch in the not too distant future (though it feels fine now).
