As it is such a lovely day, and the brake pad wear indicator on the car (a '97 Mondeo) came on the other day I thought I'd change the pads/bleed the system etc.

All seems to have gone wel until I go for a test drive and find that when the engine is on the brake pedal just goes straight to the floor when trying to brake (its fine when the engine is off). Odd thinks I, so off with the wheels again and it appears that the pads retract from the disks once the brake pedal has been released.

Following a quick call to a friend of a friend it would appear likely that this is because I pushed the pistons back in without losening the bleed valves and the non-return valves on the ABS system dont like this. What he couldnt tell me (and why I'm posting) is if theres any way to fix this without replacing the ABS control unit/non-return valves? It seems the valves are opened electronically when the engine starts because the pedal feels normal (but without servo assist) when the engine isn't running.

Any help would br greatly appreciated because I really dont need the extra outlay of getting someone to replace the hole works at the moment.

Just for reference incase anyone else has the same problem in the future.

It wasnt anything to do with the non-return valves at all, the spring clips on the pads had gone back on in such a way that they were pulling the pad away from the disk; quite why this didnt manifest itself when the engine wasn't on I dont know. Anyway, a hugely simple solution to the problem.
