Is it possible to get a slightly oversized/different threaded bolt to go in a M8 hole that has been over tightened ??

The reason i ask is, it looks like one of the slave cylinder bolts on my RV8 bell housing has been gorrilard & wont nip properly...

Also, i will want to put a helicoil in anyway, rather than bodge long term but the holes are capted, so is possible to get a shortened tap? or shall i just drill the back of the cap out ??

The sump needs to come off for access to drill/tap as well & not much time at the moment..

You might try a 3/8UNC?

Best option is really to helicoil it tho, alternatively a m8 with some JB weld on it might suffice

For a start, it shouldnt have been an M8 hole to start with !!! RV8 stuff is imperial. Probably 5/16" UNC

M8 would be slightly bigger, but only very very slightly.

One option is to re-tap the same size, and screw some threaded rod in over the entire depth. that way you have decent thread coverage, then cut it to make a stud.

or just tap it out the next size up, and fit a bigger bolt.

Do what Stevie says. I've been there before and a long bolt or stud has saved me even if you have to force the fecker home. Ooops, did I just say that.

Hmmm scratchchin the bolt screwed into a M8 heli perfectly....

Looks like i might end up with a studded slave cylinder

Still thinking that if i need to tap the hole, its a cast/blocked end!! Can i get a short/less run-in tap ??

They come in three types for any size;

Taper
Second
Plug

You want plug, and possibly second, if you drill the hole out at all.

I've got one of these

Looking at the tap, it's the first three threads that are heavily tappered so looks like it might do a blind hole.

Sounds like you've got a second. Might be allright, although if you're coiling it, absolute depth is probably not going to be a problem anyhow.

I've said before that I don't like thread inserts, but I'm sure it's a valid solution.
