Please can anyone explain this. I finished painting my lovely car with a metallic basecoat, then applied a two pack clearcoat laquer. It looked lovely, but when I added a second coat of clearcoat, it started to peel. I sanded the car again, but did not remove all the clearcoat. Then I resprayed with basecoat, but it peeled again, in the same patches.

Now did I not leave enough time between the clearcoats (I left it overnight), or was that too long to leave it? Is my problem now that the clearcoat has not dried properly? Shall I leave it 2 weeks and spray again?

Please help

Not to be pedantic, but what were the instructions on the technical data sheet for the products you were using? Many clearcoats have a maximum recoat window, and putting more lacquer on them once the curing process has properly started causes an adverse reaction...

I was hoping it was something like that. Many thanks Anatol. I got the paint from a cheap internet site and so didn't get a data sheet with it.

it does sound like you added the second coat too late, I tend to give laquer a circa 1hr flash off then add the second coat, but it varies paint to paint you should always ask, never had it peel before but have had it wrinkle up. The bad thing is if it gets to that stage your stuck with waiting for it to go off completely (couple of weeks or so without oven) or totally stripping that wing again, unless your very lucky and barcoat works.

Horrible things paint reactions!
