looking for anyones advice. have skoda Felicia which has developed a whine when put into 5th.is the box rip or do you think a change in oil may keep it going for a while.not a mechanic you see but need to get to work while i organize booking in. is it safe to drive or could the whole thing just seize??j ust spent a couple of hours trying to get to check transmission fluid! its a nightmare to get to and haven't had success. the speedo cable housing is where you check the level and top up but i cant get the ***&*%*£% thing out! don't know if anyone out there has managed it before, but there doesn't seem to be enough room to get leverage on the gnarled nut thingy to undo it. any help would be much appreciated!

Changing the gearbox oil probably won't stop it whining unless (theres just no oil in it!) but might prolong the life of it, can't help with the inaccessible gnarly bit though sorry

My experience of gearboxes and diffs is that they tend to get noisy when the bearings or gears wear, but if it's normal wear it will progressively get worse and worse over time. I've driven hundreds of miles with the transmission sounding as if it was drilling its way through the side of the car, just treat it gently, avoid any sharp loads on the transmission, if you find that the noise only occurs in certain situations (in a particular gear, or when you're accelerating, or using engine braking) then avoid doing that. If you only get nasty noises in fifth gear then avoiding fifth gear will probably extend the life of the gearbox significantly while you organise repairs.
