Hello all - i'm expecting my new gearbox for my bedford rascal romahome to arrive shortly but I need some advice with fitting it. firstly how do i do it? i presume i just empty the old 1, take it off, put the new one on and then put some oil in it and connect the cables?
any tips or advice would be brilliant.
Also i need to know what type of gearbox oil it would take, does anyone know?

Jack it up on four axle stands/ramps.
Disconnect battery.
Put lever to neutral, lift carpet/gear gaiter.
Undo the ring of four bolts and withdraw the gear lever.
Remove the starter motor (don`t bother with the electrical, just tuck it out of the way.)
remove propshaft bolts.
Slacken clutch cable and unclip.
Remove the tinplate over the front of the bellhousing.
Support the engine with a jack to stop it tipping.
You may find it easier to remove the gearbox crossmember
Undo all engine to gearbox bolts.
Lay underneath gearbox and support with your hands and knees.
Genty slide gearbox along studs towards rear of car.
Let out a small whine as the gearbox crashes onto your chest breaking the third rib.
Curse as gearbox oil gently soaks into your crotch (you will never, ever get rid of the smell)
(An alterntive is to drain the gearbox first and lift it out with a trolley jack, but my way is much more fun)
get out from under car complete with gearbox.
If I were you, I would replace the clutch - saves doing it later. A high performance engine in a nippy little trackday special will eat cluches. wink
Replacement is opposite of above (as they say in Haynesland)

Dont know what grade of gear oil I`m afraid - but as a tip, refill via the gearlever hole as it`s easier and less messy.
Another tip - do not overtighten the four bolts securing the gearlever - they strip threads really easily.

NB. information based on gearbox swap in a Suzuki SJ - same running gear.

cheers towie for your help.
unfortunately i've already gone through the agony of changing the gearbox, and i made a mistake by not lining it up correctly. it's going in the garage tomorrow, and also havin the clutch replaced. as you say, it's worth changing it while the gearbox is off.
