I'm going back a few years, but I used to work in a car factory and, while obviously we used a lot of tyres, we used to get scores of rejects every day.

I also had a set of Goodyear tyres replaced on a new Cavalier that wouldn't balance - Goodyear sent someone from the factory in Wolverhampton and he said they tyres had a 'splice' in the sidewalls. He organised for them to be replaced then with Michelins at tyre depot that Goodyear owned.
