Hi, i'm looking to buy a Toyota Celica 1.8 in the next few months.
Was wondering if there are any particluar problems to look out for when buying one?
Also what are prices like for servicing?
Finally how much would i be looking to pay for one about a 2004 model with less than 40k miles on the clock. Seen quite a few for under £11k. Is this about right? My top limit is £11k and would like as new model as possible.
Also what sort of return are people getting in terms of mpg's

Thanks

bint

140 or 190 ? Depending on which depends on cost, problems (pretty minimal for both, especially 2004's) and mpg.

140 = standard VVTi 140bhp = economical, nippy (but not mindblowingly quick) cheap to insure, service and run. Spare parts easy peasy, only issues maybe bubbling alloys and thin paintwork - the early models, pre 2002 facelift, occasionally suffered from oval cylinders and if not kept in check, oil starvation. But my 140 never consumed oil and I did 2k a month in her.

190/TSport/GT (they come in various guises but are essentially one and the same) = VVTLi (L stands for liiiiiiiiift!) 190bhp with the power being the same as the 140 up to about 6200rpm when lift kicks in - a bit like the Honda V-Tec. Look out for lift bolts needing replacing - a few quid - literally - and same niggles as above.

Both cars have cam chains not belts, both are a pleasure to run as they are very reliable and easy to care for.

The experts; www.celica-club.co.uk will be able to answer your Q's and also cars for sale etc.

Details on servicing; http://www.celica-club.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Guide_...

Same with any car - it's only worth what you're prepared to pay. Mileage doesn't mean much - it's a jap car it'll run for years, and the usual check history and servicing etc.

Thanks very much, by looking at that thread service costs seem pretty cheap.
Think i may go for the 140 bhp model but not sure at the minute. Is a big step up from the Citroen c2 1.4 i'm driving at the minute!
First thing for me i think is to take one out for a test drive and see what they are like. Hopefully i'll do this in the next few weeks once my car is stripped of aftermarket modifications and sold.
Thanks again.

They are - and depending on where you are in the country, some of the dealerships give 10% discount to club members.

Go test drive one and see what you think. The 140 is a great car - as stated, I used it for work hence doing 2K a month in it and loved it.

But my Alfa stomps all over it *grin* as does the GT4 Celica in the garage - that will be your next step after the 140! smile

Dont get a 140. Get the 190 if you can insure it. But as bint said, GT4 is the best option biggrin But you'll have a huge chunk of change burning a hole in your pocket if you did ...

I bought a 140 in November last year. In 6 months, it's cost me nothing apart from tax, insurance and fuel. The alloys are a bit of a state - lacquer peeling nastily on a couple - but apart from that it's totally faultless. It loooooves to be thrashed, which suits me! There's tons of grip, the steering is very direct, gearshift firm and precise (albeit with an over-eager spring).

My only real criticism is that it's a little uninspiring. It's all very competent, but doesn't feel "special". However, if that's the only negative that can be thrown at a car then you know there's not much wrong with it.

It's probably a very good "next step" from a C2.

Bubbling alloys are a known common problem - Toyota will replace if the car is still under warranty. You could do what I did, buy a set of 17's and get the bubbly 16's replaced under warranty, sell and cover the cost of the 17's that way smile

Trust me. You won't.

Or did you mean "You'd better have a huge chunk of change..."

He might have meant that BUYING a GT4 is cheaper than a 2nd hand/new gen7 - OWNING is obviously a different kettle of fish.
