Could be the diff, or the gearbox. It would be pretty hard to tell where it is coming from accurately enough to tell the difference. 40k is quite early for a diff to go. But if you're getting a warbling/whining noise that varies with speed and acceleration, the diff would be a definite suspect. The good news is you should get plenty of notice, and it will get really really obvious before it finally grinds to a stop. Definitely worth mentioning it at the next service though, if you don't do anything about it before hand.
