newbie....just bought my first 911!
Discussion
Had to share my exitement with some like minded folks (my girlfriend just isn't interested...no matter how much I talk about it:-))
Firstly, thanks to everyone for supplying great info on buying tips...I've spent an unhealthy amount of time reading this forum!
.....sooo...I pick up my 996 Carrera 4 (1999, 50k, GT3 Aero kit, basalt black, grahite interior) tomorrow. I purchased it for £39,995 from MT performance ltd in Mobberly....Mike was great, I would thouroughly recomend him to others (mind you, I've not picked up the motor yet!)
It was a hard choice between a 1997 993 c2s and the 996. He had both for sale so I got a good opportunity to drive them both back to back. Having traded in my TT (Audi, not Porsche unfortunately!) I felt that the level of refinement just wasn't what I was used to in the 993.....(I thought it was southerners who were supposed to be soft;-)
The 993 felt a little skitish over the bumps wheras the 996 just felt so planted on any surface. I can appreciate that the 993 was much more the "driver's choice" but, hey, I've owned a TVR before and don't really want to change my underpants everytime I go for a drive (I told you I was soft!)
The 993 felt a lot more like my old Chimeara, although I should hope that the porsche garages are a bit less slap dash than their TVR counterparts (I once took it in because the doors were filling up with water ....honestly, it was like a tsunami every time I braked! Their initial response was to tell me that I shouldn't worry about it as the whole car was fibre-glass anyway and would't rust. When I infomed them that this wasn't really the point, a chap came out of the garage with a Black and Decker drill and very kindly drilled half a dozen holes in the bottom of each door!!)
I digress (I'm sure I'll get flamed from all the TVR owners...not bad for a first post!)
My first thoughts were towards an M3, but decided against it for all the same reasons many of postings here have pointed out (handling not as good, overblown saloon, iffy residuals when a new model arrives..etc) When I drove the 996 I was totally blown away by the whole experience...can't wait to shre my experiences with you all!! Cheers!

...Black with grey interior, right? Hate to tell you, think that's my old insurance write-off!!
...just kidding! Sounds like a great buy - you'll love it more and more as the months pass. Enjoy (from one C4 owner to another!).
My wife's not interested in my car either.
