Depends.

How many kids you got / how often you make trips down
the tip / is it your only car ?

Me, I'd go for a 530 petrol saloon. It'll still crack
150 mph, sensible load space for nearly all jobs.

Waftastic at 120 mph, as I found out a few weeks
ago.

The 335d is an absolute monster of a car...felt quicker than my M3 smile

Size is the key.

Fair enough'ski. I haven't had a chance to drive the 5 series version, but was completely blown away by the torque on the 335d!! smile

Depends if you dont mind paying extra for the 5 series. They are pretty much equal on speed - the 3 probably slightly better on a back road.

Id go for the 5 because i prefer the looks..

I posted on another thread, it was discussing 335i vs 530i but the points are still valid......

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

The 3 series everytime imho, the new 3 is as big as the E39 anyway, the new 5er feels more like a 7 series. Although the new 7 series is massive and I am sure in a few years we will be saying 'the new one series is as big as the old 2004-2009 7 series from 10 years ago.' wink

It might have the same external dimensions as an e39, but you'll probably find the inside is the same as an e46 - all that extra space is taken up with 'safety' features like passenger protection, crumple zones and airbags.

Had the chance to try the e34 M5 against the e60, and while the external dimensions of the new one make it look much larger, there is still a lack of rear legroom for such a large car. Simple test for me is to put the driver's seat in my perfect position and then see if I can fit comfortably behind the driver's seat - if my knees are hitting the seat then I'd say it's not big enough.

I can hardly get my knees past the rear of the B pillar on an e46/e92 - maybe I'm just big in that department wink

Size is not an issue as we have a RRS for when i need to go to the tip....more interested in which would be the better car to own overall we only have one child so space is not the issue....more a point of which one would i be more satisfied with....

Well if you don`t need then space then get the smaller, lighter car.

I tried both 3 and 5 Tourers and chose the 3.

I've got 2 kids under 3 years and a Labrador and the 3 Series copes fine with everything I throw at it.

It's faster, cheaper, handles better and (so I'm told) is better screwed together than the 5

(besides in my case, I wanted the 335i and there's no 5 Series alternative)

At the moment im swaying toward the 335d as i dont think the 535 is as pretty in either touring or saloon......I currently have a 650 cab so will i notice a major gain or loss in the perfoemance dept for 335d?? also what colours?? Ive seen a Le Mans Blue and Black, both tourings, the black looked more sinister both ex demos with good spec.

Different cars for different people...would you buy a Ford Focus or a Mondeo with the same engines? Depends on what you want really...

I wouldnt change my 535d for a 335d even if I was paid loadsa money on top...IMHO the E90 3 Series has the most ungliest backside of any car on the road today vomit reminds me of the old Primera's....

I have an LCI 535d Sport with lots of toys including the sports gear box (paddle shift).

I've been lucky enough to own several other performance cars including a Boxster and a 996 C2 and the 535d impresses me equally as much as either of those two cars ever did.

I've had it chipped and it really does fly when you want it to. Today the traction control light was flicking on when I had my foot down in 3rd gear!

I'm sure either the 3 or 5 would do the job equally as well as each other, I just view the 5 as a more rounded proposal.

Ive had both 535d and 335d. 5 series is the better car imho , looks better, roomier , quieter , just a nicer car and a more relaxed place to be to the miles in ..

I had the same choice earlier in the year and it was head vs heart for me.

buying with my head i would have a 535d tourer better as a family car ,but I bought with my heart and bought a 335d M sport saloon, yes its not as big / noiser/ doesnt look as nice, firmer ride, but I forgive it everything when im driving it,Its a hoot to drive and hoon in , we have 3 kids and we used it to do 2,000 miles in a week on holiday this year even when we had a A6 Avant on the drive that I could have used, we got all the stuff in the boot and the 3 kids in the back and they never complained once about space or leg room (we were stuck in the flood traffic)when we were in the car for 8 hours in one stint!

Have got both a 535d tourer and a 335d coupe (wife drives the 535d) and both superb cars - just down to having that extra bit of room - speed wise the 335d gradually pulls away from the 535d in a straight line shoot out (tried it on the motorway back from holiday me vs the wife)
