Climate Control repairs???

My climate control AC has gone on the blink and will blow hot and hot air only this has happened twice now, VW have said its a major job and will cost around 600 notes! Any other Golf drivers or VW bods had a similar prob? Any idea as to a cheaper way of returning to cool air motoring??
