Looking to put a sports exhaust on my Chim 450. Anyone tell me the benefits (noise I guess...!) or negatives and likely cost. Is there a particularly good one to buy, and is it a straightforward dealer fit? New to TVR ownership, so sorry if you've seen this question before!

Positives the sound, apparently little actual power difference although some will beg to differ on this one. Negatives, the noise level may make your life difficult if you do track days. Cost - pass, sry.

Cheers,

We test drove a 4.0 Chimaera with the 'Fernies' sports exhaust, now while a real laugh a minute and anything not firmly bolted down or concreted shook to it's very foundations, it was - in my opinion - a tad too loud for everyday use. Now as a weekend car /

why do you want a sports exhaust? performance or noise....if it's for noise you can get a simple mod done that makes the thing sound amazing but (don't quote me on this) doesn't knacker you on track days

RCT,

I have a 3-qtr sports exhaust on my Chim, and it sounds fantastic, not too OTT...just right. Steve at Thames Valley RaceTech did the job. Haven't driven it all week, but the weather today demands a blast...roof off, sunglasses and fleece = Mad Girrl!

rivergirl - how much did the sports system cost, and is it a particular make I could purchase direct and have fitted locally (Sussex)?

Had a top-down blast myself today - great therapy! Also flashed a fellow Chim driver who totally ignored me!!

RCT,

The job was done by a TVR specialist, by fitting a 3-qtr sleeve within the exhaust system, and that's the extent of my comprehension, I will admit. It does sound superb and it was fitted for around £100. I opted for the 3-qtr, as I thought the full exhaust was a bit OTT for me...but it does the business, it sounds *luvvly* and really turns heads!

Went for that chilling blast, too, and going for another tomorrow

the mod involves removing the exhaust, grinding off the back of the silencer, removing the packing, wedging 2 pieces of scaffolding in, repack and weld the end of the silencer on

Interesting to hear how it goes Gowan - I've got a '98 S plate 450 too, so it's a good comparison!. How much and where are you having it done?

Depends. If you want to go play on tracks then leave the exhaust alone as you will struggle with noise regs even with add on silencers and so on. Also do not underestimate the tiring effect excessive noise can have on long journeys.

Some of the mods described will take the car upto 110-112 db at 3/4 throttle. A full through exhaust could easily hit 115+ With most tracks needing around 98-100 or 103-105 at best, you can forget any real fun on a track or airfield.

Just bear this in mind.
