I am currently looking at an E36 M3 which is for sale on this site.
The car has 108k miles with full service history and is a 96 on a P plate.
The seller has sent me some finer and more detailed pictures of the imperfections of the car which includes the arches. Not only are the arches rusting but its started to go up to the panel now.
I know this is common on the car but its left me wondering whether to walk away as im now thinking what else has been overlooked.
Should this put me off?

Simply depends on price.
At this kind of age condition is everything, and will dictate the price more than any other factor.
It should be easy enough to find another car with no rust, but the price should reflect this.
Ive seen a few german cars of a similar vintage with a bit of rust round the arches, its not totally unheard of. The chances are that the car you are looking at will have had some paint in its life.

you need to think about what you are after in the car. pristine or just a run about. you'll get what you pay for.you need to ask your self, can you handle an evo or are you just a dreaming tyre kicker?
Don't mean to sound pig-headed but my Evo is proof that a 9/10 year old car can still look like it's just come out of the showroom. There is not a mark on in let alone any rust.
As far as I'm concerned, rust on the rear arches is a sure sign that the car has not been looked after properly or has either been in a shunt.
IMO, you should avoid. there are far better examples out there for the money. Or if you double your price you can have mine

Getting back to the original topic, lots of E36s rust on the rear arches. That the current owner hasn't had the work done isn't necessarily the end of the world.
Give the rest of the car a thorough going over, and if that's the only thing that needs doing then use it as a bargaining tool, get the work done and enjoy the car!
However, if you want a concours car out of the box, I'd suggest you keep looking. At that sort of price you will be looking at "normal" cars, not absolutely pristine.

Its my car ;0) Just been quoted £450 to bead blast the arches, plate and paint, its the usual issue, mud and crap hasnt been cleaned from the inner arches, so its worked its way to the surface.
The osr just needs a clean out and paint, and the nsr needs a plate and the same.
The rest of the car (bar usual issue on boot where the drain holes hoe water) is in good order, and seems to have been looked after.
This is the 1st m3 in 10 ive had thats had the arches go, which considering the extensice histroy is a shame as the cars been looked after.

PeterGreen: Hi mate, mines a P96, full spec, with new interior and new wheels, nearly £1500 worth, so me thinks 5500 would be a bit low, and everyone knows just becuase youre lucky to find a good deal doesnt mean everyone has to drop there prices.
I was looking at prices everywhere over the last 3 mths and a decent colour, not too many miles, with good spec and leather was costing 6500-7500. The cheap ones look great, till you notice wrong colour, no leather, no a/c.
Plus rear exhaust £500, set of tyres £600, Cats £1000+, decent servce £250 - £500 so the cheap cars suddeny get dear, and as ive bought over 15 e36s ove rthe last 10 years, I think i can speak about it with some for of authority

ASBO: Car is HPI Clear and has been looked after, the previous owners just havent looked after the arches, not everyone is as sad as us lot.
Jimmy: You didnt offer any less, you said you didnt want it, so i said ok? I'd take 6K for her. as already took deposit from a guy who made me wait 2 months then didnt come up with the funds.
The car is in really good order bar the issues, and as for price spme numbties are after 8-9K for low miles 96 editions.
The main thing Id say is my histroy is very good, they wheels are mint, leather is new, and its got recipts to show all the care its had over the years. Only selling as ready for next project.
