I have a Corvette LS2 engine.
By chance I happened to see a Monaro on the ramps at Haywood and Scott having an exhaust fitted. It got me thinking. The shape of the Monaro sump could suit my needs better, (as steering column crosses engine at back of engine, rather than at front of engine).

1) Does anyone know if the LS2 block on the Monaro is the same as the basic block on a LS2 Corvette.

2) Does anyone have a picture of the insides of a Monaro sump, so I can see how baffled it is. Or suggest where to look to find these details.

3)Which Monaro models should I look for for the lowest ground clearance and best baffles.

4)Best place to find a sump.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Kevin

In order.

1, Yes,

2, Yes, i can take some for you.

3, All monaro models use the same sump arrangement.

4, I think i may have a spare sump, i'll have to check!

I guess this is for a custom project? Can you reveal what? We like custom projects

Dont have any internal pics, but I assume baffling is decent.

Obviously you would need an oil pickup to suit any sump change.

Thanks that looks ideal, I was worried that it would be too tall. Planning on putting it in a kit car.

I am going to have side exit exausts, and with the cut away section at the back, rather than at the front, may mean that I will be able to run a 2 or a 2.5 inch balancing tube linking the two sides of the exaust system.

Steve, thanks for the pictures, good thinking with the oil pick up.

Monkfish, if this is what you have got, would be interested, I have just sent you an email.

Balance pipes or crossovers, are normally mounted much further back on the car, once flowing out the exhaust system.. Not close to the headers.

Why would you want them right at the front like that ?

In a word - Space
It will have a very short exhaust system.
The plan
- 4 primaries (1 3/4 inch) going into the 4-1 collector (2 1/2 inch)
- then about 6 inches from collector, run a balance tube (size to be decided)
- then about 6 inches from balance tube out/in let the silencer start. (silencer is 30inches long)
- Exhaust pipe comes out just before rear wheel arch.

Do you think this will work with the LS2.
From others that have done this with the Rover V8, this layout has worked on their cars.
Main benefit for me would be noise - both in getting the exhaust note that I want, and muffling the sound, which will be useful for trackdays.

I have not spent the money yet, on getting the manifold fabricated yet, so I have a blank sheet of paper at the moment. So any opinions welcome.

Check out simpson race exhaust in Slough, the guys there are top notch. Very good work, I think one of the guys worked with a F1 team.
Not too pricey either. http://www.simpsonraceexhausts.com/
Loads of nice pics of their work in the gallery.

Agreed - This is where I am buying manifolds from. I already have a pair of silencers from them, and will be getting them to make the manifolds. Its a long way from Essex, but worth the trip as I have seen what they have done on other cars.

Some pictures of interest. This was getting around a few years ago down here and from all accounts was just a touch fast!! I think it had a supercharged LS1 at the front. It was called an X7 but it is hard to find stuff on the web about it now.

If space is so tight, why not just use some factory style manifolds, and save yourself a few quid ?

Hi Kevin, if you buy a sump make sure you get the sump, oil pickup tube, dipstick and dipstick tube then you'll have all the right parts. Ls2 sumps/blocks are interchangeable. I have most of the different sumps and also some vette hydroformed headers if you get stuck. They are 4 into 1 and can be mated to an existing system with a bit of work. The monaro sump has a horozontal baffle much like the camaro with the oil pickup screen underneath. It's a reasonably good arrangement and better then the ls2 sump imo. My favourite sump is the split level big wing but if you've space constraints that may not fit.

motomk - yes these pictures are of interest, I will do some searching.

StevieTurbo - My space restraints are mainly
- overall height of engine and,
- because of short length of car, the length available for my exhaust system.
(This could easily be solved by running an exaust under car (similar to car in picture), with exaust exits at rear. But the reason I do not want to do this is that it would mean reducing ground clearance, or in reality having to raise height of car to compensate).
Your right, the standard manifolds are very neat. I will have another look to find out if I can run a system using these without too many 90 degree bends. The other advantage, would be it would be it would be easier for me to run a shorter balance pipe, which I believe is an advantage. And would be cheaper.
The original idea to have system fabricated was before thinking about a balance pipe (ie not linking the two sides), as this would have allowed me a very neat smoothly curved system, without any tight bends.
I have got some thinking to do.

Boosted LS1 - would be interested in more details of other available (wet) sumps, as long as they are not any taller than 6inches.

Check out http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=2...

Search for "oil pan" as the yanks call it.

There are various types out there, although most are rear sump style. The GTO/Monaro being the exception.

Canton, Moroso, Autokraft all make custom oil pans..again, mostly rear sump.

Most would be circa 6" tall.

In fact....
