When changing gear from 2nd to 3rd, the gears crunch, only happens when changing up, not down, and in no other gear selection, if you take it nice and slow, doesn't happen, but when you want to drive enthusiastically this is a tad painful.

Could this be low gearbox oil/wrong grade?? or something more expensive??

I suppose its time to get the Bible!!

sounds like worn synchro on 3rd. suggest you double declutch upwards (without revving in between gears)

Snatching the gears can cause the same problem on a T5 Gearbox. To change quickly you need to be very precise otherwise it can baulk. Make sure you are depressing the clutch pedal fully (common mistake).

Thanks, I have made sure that the clutch is fully depressed, had the car for about 6 months before it started happening, hoping its an easy to rectify problem.

Mine started to do this when changing from 4th to 5th when revs in 4th were above about 4000rpm before the change. The problem started immediately after a gearbox oil change which had me wooried but was probably just coincidence ... After investigating all of the suggested clutch problems etc it was finally confirmed to be a worn 5th gear synchro (T5 box with 5000 miles on it at the time).

Rectified easily by a gear box change under warranty but my old gearbox was no doubt repaired and refitted to someone elses car within the week!

Sounds like you may need a new 3rd gear synchro hub ...
