The engine on my car seems to take forever to warm up to 80/90, even when travelling slowly round town. Also once warm it then can cool to 50 if blasting for a while!
It has been suggested that the thermostat which controls water flow through the engine might be knackered.
Anyone had similar problems, or is it just too cold outside for TVR's?

Andrew,

I had a similar problem, which I posted under Winter water temperature http://nlw2k4.nildram.co.uk:11914/gassing/topic.asp?t=4683&f=8&h=0.

My problem turned out to be the thermostat closing very slowly. I also found that the temperature gauge was reading about 7 degrees low.

Hope you get it sorted.

Do get the cold engine bit now and again. Had it on a few runs when cold out side and doing 50-60 ish stuck behind traffic. Otherwise temp is ok. Assumed due to loads of cold air whipping past the engine- although what I know about cars is writtain on a matchstick in my pocket- easy for quick reference.

Not knowing what temp your car reached in the summer, my thinking is that the thermostat is closed when starting from cold and opens as the temp rises.

This should be around 70-85 preferably before fans cut in. You'll know when it does not open.

Mine was at 85-95 in the summer and barely above 70 now.

Don't assume the gauge is too accurate - use your eyes, ears etc. Enjoy.
