I'm curious to know whether it's a trivial task or not to adjust the mileage on a Z4. If it's not, how is it possible for the mileage to go down??

edit: if it is possible, are there any flags triggered that can be found by a dealer, or does it require written permission from BMW etc

little worried that "guy with a laptop" has reprogrammed it, but no idea if that's feasible or not.

A friend of a friend owns a car sales garage and he told me a story about a new'ish bmw he bought from another trader. He said he had some work done on it before it went into the showroom - only when the key was put into some reader the mileage reading that came up from the key was not the same as the mileage on the dash display... Needless to say, he called the trader he bought the car from to come and pick his car back up..

YOU bought a car with whatever mileage, YOU added to that mileage. Live with it.

Eh?

Errr... having read the linked thread it seems that the OP suspects (quite reasonably) that his car has been clocked whilst in the possession of a valet parking organisation.

It is entirely possible and any decent "clocker" will do 2nd key too.

I saw an article on a TV program (like Watchdog but not Watchdog) about clocking digital odometers. Seems it's very easy to do, though whether a clocker's actions would do everything needed to cover the car's true mileage is another matter.

Adjusting the mileage on the cluster is a very simple thing to do with the right software, tricky bit comes when the ECU and other areas where it's stored don't tally with the cluste, as said key is another place mileage is stored, this is what i was lead to understand by the guy who re-mapped my car, he also offers the "Mileage Adjustment" service.
