is this located under the drivers seat? the sensor i mean, by all accounts its not too hard to fix, the light stays on permanently and im thinking maybe the sensor?

I had this recently on my e36(not m3) and it was the wiring harness to the sensor that had failed.

I didn't do it, but its under one of the front seats. Not sure if yours has 2 airbags, as mine does, then i think there is one under each seat.
Have you tried just resetting the light? if not it might be worth trying as sometimes they do come up for no reason. if there is a fault it will come straight back on again.
