I thought I'd done all the reading on pistonheads I possibly could but now I am thinking maybe not.

Have just agreed a deal at a 'stealer' for an E46 330d touring nice spec. Noticed that the exhaust had been replaced thinking that was strange for an 03 with less than 40k on the clock. Asked the dealer and he said we just like to ensure cars are in tiptop condition when they go out.

Have just read a thread where somebody claimed if the turbo fails you have to replace the exhaust system is this true.

Should I walk away from the deal?

Relax the car is covered by a twelve month BMW warranty and the turbo is unlikely to fail twice

Cheers Mark

Personally I wouldn't worry, the BMW warranty will cover anything. Had two e46 330ds and they were as good as gold.

Hi Mark,

For peace of mind, if you need it, take the reg number to another dealer, or call BMWUK and they'll tell you the service history of the car. This will include any "extra" work and/or bodywork done at any BMW dealer since the car was new.

Wouldn't bother me, but I'd do a little bit of background to put my mind at rest.

Cheers
Matt

Thanks guys

You read so many horror stories about turbos failing you get the impression that it’s bound to happen to you. I suspect you only hear about the small % that go wrong and not the 1000's that don't. Things now back in perspective !!

Thanks again

Turbo failures are quite rare.We replace only a small amount these days.
If it do'es fail then warranty will cover any damage....

And I've been offered the usual crap trade in price.

p.s if you put the reg number up one of the kindly BMW types that reads here might be able to check the computer for you to see if it's had turbo work. I think you're probably wrong though as 30k is light usage and nearly 5 years down the line the exhaust is probably ready for a change.

Thanks Olf

Have contacted BMW and checked out the history and everything appears to tally.

for the last 3 years the car has been serviced by the selling dealership not sure if that is a good or bad thing

re how much to ad your own car for? No idea but several factors to take into account but I suppose the most important one is how desperate you are to sell. No rush ask a little more need a quick sale drop it a bit.

I paid bang on the nose what 'parkers' valued the vehicle at with no extras other than £500 more for an auto

From my point of view I paid 15.5 for a slightly older less miles similar spec, (minus ipod smoked glass sunroof) dealer supplied car. So me personally I would be looking to pay privatly 14.5 maybe cheeky and offer 14.0 but as usual with these things you are a couple of days too late otherwise I may have been tempted but then again my offer may be less than you have been offered trade in!!

Dealers normally work on a £3k to £5k mark up if thats any help
