Hi all,

I am hoping to chop my 328 in against an new car and decided it need to be an M of some description but i'm torn!!!

My choices are E39 M5, E46 M3 or S50 M coupe.

So which one would you buy and why?

Edited LPG out as I want opinions on the cars not the LPG issue i can understand how an M running on gas would be wrong!

It won't be used as a commuter car fortunatly as I commute by helicopter smile (Work off-shore so not that glamorous!)

Cheers

Rob

Not at all slightly confused at your problem with it!!

LPG haf the cost of petrol and higher octane so can be mapped to produce more power biggrin

I know its not the purists view but in this day and age fuel is getting expensive although would probably only go down the LPG route on the M5.

Can someone give me some substantiated reason as to not put LPG in an M car?

My advice would be to buy the E39 M5, in Carbon Black, but then I'm biased.

Unfortunately I have to agree with everyone else with regards to the LPG issue. In reality there's probably no real reason why you shouldn't run an M car on LPG, other than it just doesn't seem right.

My advice, for what it's worth, would be to spend the £1,500, or what ever it costs to convert to LPG, to buy a small economical car for day to day running, and keep whatever M car you buy for pleasure use. That way, as well as saving on fuel, you'll also save on depreciation.

Chers for your reply I am more in favour to the M5 at the moment as its so practicle, for that reason it would be easier to keep longer.

Inderstand the LPG concerns perhaps i'll rethink that idea. I have edited it out of my original post so I can get people's opinions on the cars not te LPG issue!

Can you tell me abit more my main worry is how chuckable are they? I would like to do 2 or 3 trackdays a year, have heard the brakes need an upgrade which is not surprising as its no lightweight.

The M5 is a great roadcar, put on a decent exhaust and if you can live with the oil consumption (upto a litre over 1500 miles) and the fuel consumption, 20 mpg without much of a problem and a range of under 300 miles away you go. However not so good on track, yes the car is fast, but it is heavy and engine lead. the gear change is not the best and the steering is not great when compared to most track day warriors.

The brakes are OK, so long as you put on some better pads and get the braided hoses and decent fluid. I would also have the piston seals replaced because these are never looked at during routine servicing.

If you want a fun car and something different a Z3M is the way to go. Manly to drive, very different to look at, fast, unique to won and will do track work (front strut brace required) better than an E39 M5.

For pace and effortless driving the E39 is great but you cannot turn off the traction control and it has too many electronics to enable you to really love the whole car. Finally they can be very expensive if things go wrong! Just read the running reports of Bob H in BMW Car each month.

If you enjoy a real car and want something to have a long term realtionship with why not look at a decent 3.6 or 3.8 BMW E34 M5!!!

1) Oil consumption only affects pre-March 2000 cars. Mine burns nothing at all.

2) There is no need to replace brake piston seals unless you experience problems with the braking.

3) You can turn off the traction control with a push of one button

The deceision making process is down to you. If you do decide to buy an M5, then please, do us all a favour and look after it.

M5 is coming out on top surprised no one has mentioned the M3 as I assumed it would be a bridge between the M Coupe and M5. Am I wrong?

Yeah youre probably right.

If i was in your position:

Z3M Coupe
e46 M3
e39 M5

or why not stray and get a B5 RS4?

e39 traction control, pressing the button reduces it by (from memory) 25%. However, if you hold it down for 10 seconds be prepared for some surprises on your next journey.

I'd say an M3 is a better point-to-point car, if lacking the crushing power of an M5.

Depends on whether you want the space and comfort of an 5er over the chuckability of a 3er.

black S50 M Coupe!

Why? You wont pass another 10 in the 20 miles to work like you would with the M3 and although the M5 is fantastic its just a 4 door salloon (looks wise). The M Coupe is something abit special (In My Opinion of course)

The M5 must be different as it goes completley with one touch.

The MCoupe is a fine looking machine and a complete hooligan.
Quite rare too.
