Brake service/fluid change

Apparently the date of the next fluid chsnge is programmed into the car,a '98 e39! How do you access the info? Or is it only available if you have diagnostics done? I was told thst you switch the ignition to position one and then press the mileage reset, but all that did was reset the mileage! Or do you just wait for a warning or go by the handbook!
